At what point do you medicate a fever in an infant?

My little guy has had a low grade fever since yesterday evening, ranging from 100.5 to 100.9 (so pretty low).  I gave him a dose of Tylenol when he woke up crying at about 12:30 am, which he promptly puked up.  He is eating fine and otherwise being his regular charming self.  Would you try and medicate him again or just let the low fever run its course?  He's a week shy of 4 months old.

  • I think the rule of thumb now is to not medicate unless their behavior is different, or they are showing symptoms. If he's acting normal now, I wouldn't give him anymore meds.  You could always put a call in to the pedi and see what their advice is. GL!

  • I'm certainly not an expert, but have read that it's actually better not to medicate a low grade fever as it's the body's way of fighting off infection. If he's acting fine otherwise, I'd just let the fever run it's course. I'd try to medicate if he starts acting uncomfortable or fever gets over 101.

  • Since he is older than 3 months I would wait until 102 to medicate.

Puking up tylenol is pretty normal (for my kids when they were babies). I found mine did better when they had an empty stomach and then I nursed them after the Tylenol.

  • If he's acting fine, I would hold off - also to see if it goes up and how high.
