WDYT? Baths making DS hysterical

Baths have been part of DS's bedtime routine from the start. He usually loves them. Over the last week, he has become hysterical when I try or DH tries to bathe him. It started out as just fussing and has turned into this high pitched inconsolable pain-like scream. The little bit of Googling I have done suggests possible UTI. He has no fever, and seems to be just fine throughout the entire day. Nothing around his penis or butt look abnormal. I quadruple check the water temp, and it's been fine. Tonight was the worst, I was barely able to wash his face and neither of us could take it. Tomorrow I'm taking him to the pedi to be sure there is nothing physical going on. Have any of you dealt with anything like this? Any ideas of what could be going on? I'm at a loss and now feel like I'm just traumatizing him :-(

We went through this as a stage for (sorry) about 6 months.  It go to where we wouldn't bathe him unless he NEEDED it.  Now, he refuses to get out of the tub!

We tried a bit of everything- new toys, new foam soap, showers, etc.  The best thing that started to work (advice from the bump, of course!) was letting him play in the tub- non bath time, then getting him naked in the tub, then turning the water on slowly while he was in it.  It took some getting used to, but for a while he wound up standing and playing with it like ankle deep, but we could get him washed.

I hope its just a phase and not a UTI or something else.  GL!

  • DD starting this about the same age and it lasted for about a year. :( I also tried lots of things, new toys, letting her play, bringing her into the shower with me. And it also turned into a "only doing it when she was filthy" type of thing. Recently, she's gotten much better but HATES it when her head gets wet and when water goes on her face. I have her wear a water visor so the water stays out of her face when I wash her hair. Now it's screaming when the bath is over.

Good luck! and I hope it isn't anything serious.

  • I vote that it's probably a stage.  We've been there with both kids.  Like you, bath has been part of our bedtime routine from the very beginning and we've got fish kids yet they both hit times where hell no to the tub.  Andrew, most unpleasantly has been having a fit about baths for the last 6-1year.  He's at that age where it's all about control and he is not going to have anyone tell him what do to!  That being said they've done it at younger ages too.  Last summer it got so bad that I actually took a huge packing type plastic tub and filled it with boiling water and cold water from the house and a ton of bubbles, viola they loved and didn't even realize they were getting their bathsBig Smile
  • We went thru a time of this (sorry can't remember how old my boys were) but it was sooooo hard. We resorted to showers for awhile (with either daddy or mommy). It helped because they felt showers were more fun. It might be worth a try.
  • Thank you all for the advice. I think I am going to hold off on taking him to the pedi at least until tomorrow, when DH can be there with us. Plus I'd hate to put him through any unnecessary tests since he has no symptoms... I will try some new things tonight and see if I get a different reaction. Thanks again!

  • I was going to say maybe try the shower too...hopefully you can get some answers from the pedi.
