Day Trip Ideas??

I am thinking of surprising my Dh and the kiddos with a day trip in the next few weeks. Any recs on where to go? We are in Sac area so I would prefer not more than 2-3 hours drive time. I was thinking maybe the beach...problem is I do not know of a good clean one to take the kids. A couple years ago we took Cooper to Bodega Bay and had fun..so maybe there again. I just thought we could try a new place this time. Also any recs on a budget friendly place to eat lunch or things to do while there?

Any ideas are welcome...

Half Moon Bay is always nice.  It would be nice to get away from the yucky Sacramento heat.  Yummy restaurants everywhere.  The beaches there are nice, but there is also Lemos Farm.  There is a place to pick your own berries if they are in season---Phipps Country Store and Farm.  There is also horseback riding in HMB.

We were just in Tahoe for 5 days camping..but I did love it there.

What about a river trip?  There is an adorable old gold rush town up outside of Nevada City where the river runs right through it.  There are a variety of cabin set ups along the way which would be awesome for a family weekend and I don't think that would be much of a drive for you guys.

Of course I can't remember the name right now but DH grew up in N.C. so I'll ask him tonight.

Bodega Bay is definitely the closest beach from here. You could do the playgrounds at Golden Gate Park in SF and go to Ocean beach which is right there. You could bring a picnic and there is also a snack bar near the carousel.
