XP: Domperidone & other herbal supplements w/ BF'ing- Any thoughts???

HI Ladies,

I met with an awesome lactation consultant yesterday to come up w/ a "gameplan" for BF'ing the boys when they get here since BF'ing DS#1 did not go that well.

She suggested looking up Domperidone to take as a prescribed medication to help boost my supply, or I could look into herbal supplements such as fenugreek - which I took w/ DS#1, blessed thistle, goat's rue, fennel (I think?) and shatavaria.

I am not quite sure how I feel about taking a Rx (as I tried Reglan after DS#1 was born and the side effects were MISERABLE), or mixing all of the herbal supplements but just thought I would see what your experiences/thoughts were on any of these?!?

(FWIW, I have "mild" PCOS so I dealt with low supply issues with DS#1, but have been taking metformin - 500 mg/day t/o this pregnancy and plan to continue to take it after the boys are here.)

Any info would be greatly appreciated, TIA!!!!

  • I had supply issues and did fenugreek and Guinness. I think it helped a little but I also had a breast reduction and later a lumpectomy so we were just thrilled that I had any milk at all.
  • I used Domperidone with my daughter and thought it worked really well. I had to order it from a pharmacy in canada, though, because they don't sell it in the states. It had zero side effects.

    Also, I used this: https://www.motherlove.com/product/530-More-Milk-Plus.html

I drank that in every glass of water for months. You get used to the maple taste and when I noticed a dip in supply, I would just up the amount I took and it helped.

I plan on ordering the more milk plus before the babies get here and will start drinking it right away. I will probably hold off on the domperidone and only order it if there is a supply issue.

    Good luck!

  • I tried fenugreek when I had supply issues at the very beginning, and it helped somewhat.  When I went back to work, my supply tanked again, despite the fenugreek, and I started domperidone.  I didn't want to take Reglan because of what I read about the side effects.  I have never had any side effects with domperidone, and it definitely helped, but I still never had enough supply to BF exclusively.  I was kind of disappointed that it didn't increase my supply more than it did, but I'm glad I used it because the herbal supplements just weren't enough.

  • I tried fenugreek with little help.

Domperidone was excellent!  Really increased my supply.  You can get it from a specialty pharmacy in your area (a compounding pharmacy).  I used Bayview pharmacy in RI https://www.bayviewrx.com/ .  It's about $1/pill and they mail it out, too.

  • I struggled a lot with my supply. I never made enough to EBF, despite BFing and pumping regularly from day 1, taking a million herbal supplements, eating oatmeal, etc, etc. I did finally take Domperidone, but it was only after my supply had dwindled to 10 oz/day. I really wish I had started taking it when I was at the point of making enough milk for 1 baby, but not 2 (so, when half of their daily intake was BM).

I wouldn't say you should start out taking Dom-- see what your body does first. But know what your break point is, and then start it when you hit that point. Hopefully, you'll never need it! GL!!

ETA: I was on Met all through my pregnancy, but my OB took me off it after the kids were born. I think there's something about it possibly causing low blood sugar in babies? I didn't ever really look into it much, though.
