I go there when I want to gouge out my eyes. I post on occasion (STILL haven't settled on a name...), but it reminds me of the great "stainless steel will never look dated" argument. Abigail and Emma are nice names, but in ten years they will be as "dated" as Jennifer and Jessica. And you-neek spellings just make you look illiterate. It's crazy...

Seriously! I feel bad for kids with made up and/or misspelled names.

This. A thousand times THIS. I can also tell when people weren't just being "creative"....but they TRULY couldn't spell. Don't you think if you were naming your child and KNEW you are a crappy speller that you'd ASK or GOOGLE, or even find an old fashioned DICTIONARY before filling out a birth cert?????
Also, I saw this name the other day : Awestun. (yes....this is how the parent's decided to spell Austin). NO....it's NOT cute. Not in the least. It looks like an illiterate, backwoods, hick with 7 other kids running around the trailer said "that's a perty name...." the poor kid's gonna get beat up by the spelling alone!
I posted my potential name on there and the comments- I received back were totally mean and harsh. I would NEVER post on that board again.
I was called dumb, stupid, uneducated, needs to learn how to read/spell, etc...
there is a nice way of saying your point and a down right mean way...
Jaxson is not even that bad! I was not going to name my child, banana, apple, etc..
Jackson is not a bad name. Popular, but not bad. Jaxson is not the same name as Jackson. To be perfectly frank, it is a name that your child will have to explain and spell and RE-spell the rest of his life. It might be "cute" for a kid, but less so for a mature, professional adult. Jaxson is no different than taking any popular name and spelling it phonetically or substituting similar sounding letters. Jennifer is a nice name. Gennyfurr or Jenaphur is not.
The only exception to the "you-neek" trend is if you are naming your child the EXACT SAME NAME as a relative. If your great aunt really spelled her name Agnus-MerryKlare, you get a pass. But if her name was Agnes Marie Clare, your version is not honoring her. So if your ancestors used the name Jaxson, you may use it. Otherwise, it looks trendy and is a made up name. Though his great grandchildren could use it...

This exactly. I love the name Lorelei/Lorelai(pretty sure both are acceptable) and when I first heard it I thought it was maybe spelled Laurelae or something similar...but I'd never actually bestow it on a kid without checking!
Lorelei was our #1 name pick for a girl... I had to Google it to check on the spelling at first!

There's a lot of names I dislike. But I just don't "get" the intentionally jacking up the spelling of names. Or boys names for girls. I'd much rather have my "dated/old" girls names than have my DDs have to constantly spell out their names or be FN first initial of last name. My DD is the only Kathleen at her preschool (which is also a daycare) and doesn't go by a NN yet. If she becomes a Katie or Kate I won't make her change it, but I named her what we'll call her (other than pet names).
Meh, DS#1 has a 'trendy/you-neek' name according to lots of the baby name board regulars (Kaden). Honestly, where we are I've only heard the name 2 other times. And we didn't even think about the -aden trend (now, though, it's pretty obvious there will be a billion kids in/near his grade with a name ending in aden or something similar). We still love it though.
I also hate the weird spellings, but I figure it's better than a totally outlandish, retarded name.
Our chosen name, Aubree, will likely be spelled with two 'ee'-s at the end, not because I think it's cutesy, but because I intend to call her 'Bree' for short. I just think if we shortened Aubrey to 'Brey' it would sound like grey, but with a 'B'. So I'm a little torn on this.

Exactly our argument too. Plus its not like we are gonna spell it "Awebrei"
Re: Reading posts on the Baby Names board....
There is a fairly new post up asking for suggestions for "western" names....I REALLY wanted to reply "Clementine"

Now I've known a few Jaxsons. My friend's baby is named that and it is spelled that way. She calls him "Jax"
