Allergies!

Ok, so my seasonal allergies have hit me full force starting last week. Itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing, its just lovely and I'm miserable. I totally spaced on asking my DR at my appointment today, but what is everyone else doing for their allergies? I saw online they only recommend taking Claritin (which I've used in the past with not much luck) and Bendaryl (which I'm allergic to). Has anyone else used the Neti Pot and had success? DH has been taking Allerga and its working great for him, but its listed as a Class C drug for pregnancy :(

Re: Allergies!

  • My seasonal allergies arrive earlier in the season, so I just finished dealing with them.  This is what I did:

    - Claritin before bed.  That way any gap between the pills is while you're sleeping.

    - Shower before bed.  This washes the allergens away from your face and such so you're not rolling in them all night.  It makes a huge difference.

    - Neti Pot.  I did this in the morning to clear things out for the day.

The timing on these seemed to make a lot of difference.  I hope some of this works for you; having allergies made things really unpleasant during the last month or two. :)

  • Claritin does jack for me.   My doctor said Zyrtec was fine to take, so I took it.  I continue to take it now that I am pumping.  No issues.

  • I asked my doc about this on Friday, she said Claritin was ok to take but not Claritin D.  She said anything with a D wasn't recommended b/c of how it interacts with...the placenta I think?  I took Claritin last night, no relief.  I am thinking I have a cold, not allergies.  :-)

  • I've taken Zyrtec throughout my first pregnancy, breastfeeding, and now this one. Clariton also does nothing for me.

  • My doc approved Zyrtec (Claritin also does not work at all for me), as long as it's not Zyrtec-D.  Neti pots or hot showers/steam to clear everything out.  I've been taking Rhinocort nasal spray (also class B) instead of Zyrtec (my pulminologist prescribed it) and it works AWESOME.

  • Thanks ladies! I'll have to pick up some Zyrtec and start using the Neti Pot. I usually get seasonal allergies way earlier in the Spring and I thought I might have escaped them this year, but they showed up in full force last week :(
