Meet the baby party

I know everyone is absolutely sick of shower posts, but please bear with me. My mom has decided to throw us a meet the baby party/shower/get together/whatever after baby is born. I love this idea seeing as my two actual baby showers I had were kind of a bust (hardly anyone was able to come for whatever reasons). Party is about 5 weeks after baby is due (totally fine with me). Mom will be serving a light lunch with cake. My question is what the heck do you do at a meet the baby party? We're trying to decide if we should do a couple games with favors or anything.

Re: Meet the baby party

  • I'd say no games and no favors.  Just an open house and visiting.

This. Anything else makes it seem too much like a shower, and considering you've had 2 already you really don't need another shower.

  • I agree with the above poster. People probably won't stay long either- a couple of hours at most. Have fun :)

  • We are having one too and we are just having a cookout and just having people over to mingle, chat and meet the baby.  We don't have anything planned as far as games and we won't be giving favors or anything.

  • We'll probably have one.  The benefit of having a meet-the-baby gig is to get a whole bunch of visits done at once.  Everyone wants to see the baby but hosting them all on separate dates is a lot of visiting time.

Expecting gifts wouldn't be appropriate for this kind of event, especially if you've had two showers.  Even if they were "busts".   At ours we'll have food, cake, and the tiny bundle of joy.  No games or favors here either.  Baby games aren't fun usually anyways.   If anyone brings a gift, that will be thoughtful but not expected.

We are just having a cookout and mostly just family.  My mom is hiring a photographer to come and take pics though.  I think that will be great so no one has to worry about toting cameras around and we will all be able to order the pics we want :)

  • We're doing a very simple backyard BBQ with burgers and hot dogs.  I'll probably have a couple bags of chips and some sort of salad as well, but that's it.  Super casual!!  I'm not planning any games, but since it will be in the backyard I wouldn't be surprised if some tailgating type games broke out (bags, ladder golf).  I just want everyone to have a chance to see and meet the baby and we do BBQs pretty regularly throughout the summer anyway so its a good combo.

  • Thanks for all the responses!! I definitely wasn't expecting gifts at all. We have Everything we need and more! I love the idea of this get together saving us having to tote baby to people homes and saving on visiting time! Thanks ladies

  • In Canada, most people have their baby showers after the baby arrives, which is when I'll be having a shower. I'd say no games or anything if you already had a shower, but we play games just like you would at a before the baby is born shower.

  • I would say noo games with prizes. You could do it like a BBQ style: grilled food, corn hole, bocce ball, well any pack yard game and like pp said an open house style. Also I don't think cake is a bad idea since its a meet the baby party!

Edit: Great idea to have cake!

  • Our friend had a "Sip N' See".  I thought it was a cute idea and none of our other friends have done this.  They just had wine and summery drinks, light appetizers and desserts.  No gifts or games, literally just to see the mom and the baby.  Her family sent the invites right after the baby was born.  Maybe it was to ward off all the visitors in the beginning.  I think the baby was about 6 weeks old when they had it.
