Northern California Babies

is there really a nesting phase?

I keep on hearing about this nesting phase and I just can't imagine having the energy to want to nest. I'm so ready for this baby to get here...her nursery has been ready for 2 months, clothes washed and put away, cosleeper set up in our room.  I'm sure there may be a few things we forgot about but at this point I really don't care.

Yet it seems that everyone either IRL of on FB are telling me about this nesting phase. I did all that crap months ago, from getting carpet cleaners, window washers, changing out ceiling fans, light fixtures (remember the chandelier post). Well, I didn't do all of the above but arranged for it to get done.  What else is there to be done?

I'm just wondering...did everyone else experience a nesting phase close to giving birth? If so, how did you nest?

  • I don't know, but it sounds like you already passed your nesting phase!

  • That's what I'm thinking/saying too but people say "oh no, right before you go into labor you'll feel the need to nest"...I'm not feeling it. LOL

  • Yeah, everybody told me about that nesting phase too....  I'm still waiting for it to hit.  ;)
(For reals, though, I never had a nesting phase at the very end.  I was just exhausted and taking up to two naps a day!)
  • The day before I ended up being induced (was not a planned induction), I washed the kitchen floors and scrubbed the kitchen. Don't know where the energy for that came!

In fact, the kitchen chairs were still in the living room when I went to the hospital, I never moved them back, and was going to clean another part of the floor the day I was admitted. The only reason I didn't do it Thursday was b/c i wanted something to do on Friday!

So, yes, I had a nesting phase very close to delivery. Not sure if I would have gone into labor on my own soon if I wasn't induced.

  • I think everyone is different, you got it all ready early on, I'd just relax if you can for now.  I have been lagging on prepping for DS # 2 this time, and having to nest a bit to catch up.  I've been cleaning, but it's all needed, not extra nesting.
  • I had a nesting phase with both kids - although I don't think I was as tired as some.  It was sort of like one day I woke up and decided my closets needed to be cleaned out THEN and THERE....and then I got down and cleaned all my baseboards and blinds....and then scrubbed the kitchen floor with a sponge.   I know - crazy!

Most people nest in some way or another right before labor starts.  For me it was an urgent need to vacuum the day before I went into labor.  It wouldn't have been so noticeable if my vacuum hadn't died that day.  But I totally flipped out and called DH to come fix it or buy a new one :)
  • Since I was induced with both E and T, I don't know if I would've nested more right before labor started or not. I do know that I nested for months before with both.

With E, I decided one morning that I needed to recover the dining room chairs. With T, I couldn't open a drawer without reorganizing/decluttering it. For me, I think it was mostly nervous energy that I just had to get out on something.

  • For me it was more of a burst of energy. We'd had our carpets cleaned a few days before and still had random furniture stacked around. I was waiting for DH to put it all back (nothing heavy- lamps & end tables, etc), but I initiated moving everything put back in order. I also did a major fridge clean maybe the week before.

  • Mine consisted of cooking a ton - most nights I would prep 3 dinners and we'd eat half of 1, the rest went into the freezer for after baby. This was during the last couple of weeks before labor, so not a quick and sudden burst of energy. I never really got the urge to clean though.

  • I went through a phase where clutter just drove me up the wall, I cleared out my whole office, I cleaned out parts of the house etc, but it was not at the very end.

  • Thanks ladies! I was wondering what everyone's experiences have been.  I did a lot of nesting prior to leaving work too.  I know I'm not nesting because I like to have a spotless house and lately I couldn't care less. I have some company coming over later in the afternoon and I haven't even dusted my coffee table, in fact, there's hella crap on it and that's exactly how it will stay. LOL
