Follow Up to Birthday Hives

I just got called from the doctor and was told that Charlie is allergic to egg whites and peanuts.  Both tested in the moderate range.  She wants to retest him in a few years.

This explains the reaction to the cupcakes with the egg white frosting, but the peanut thing is a surprise.  Does anyone else have LOs that are allergig to egg whites or peanuts?

Re: Follow Up to Birthday Hives

  • While I'm sorry Charlie is allergic, I'm glad you know what's up.

Did your pediatrician tell you what precautions to take with foods? Eg. not having packaged foods that come from plants that use peanuts/peanut oils?  Is there any issue with breads (that use egg)?

I know there's a food allergy board so something to look at.

My youngest nephew (6 tomorrow) was allergic to eggs and dairy for years. He outgrew it by last year (age 5).  He's never had peanuts due to all his allergies (seasonal too). They're going to test him for peanuts soon, though. He outgrew most of his other allergies thankfully.

  • My cousin's daughter had a ton of food allergies when she was little, including egg and milk, but I think she's outgrown most of them now that she's older.

FWIW, our pedi wanted us to not do any kind of nuts until after age 2.  So we haven't tried peanuts, etc. at this point.

  • Thanks! I will check out the allergy board.

The doc said that we did not have to avoid foods that "are manufactured in a plant that processes peanuts" at this point.

The good news is that all of the other stuff he was tested for was negative!

    Boo! I'm sorry.
  • Boo!  But as the pp have said, it's something like 70 percent of kiddos who outgrow allergies.  Did they talk to you about the cross allergies - I think that's the right term - as well?  I heard one of our peds allergists and feeding specialists talk about 8 months ago and the cross allergies can apparently be just as annoying and become bad.
