Strenous hiking in first 5 weeks?

My husband and I are supposed to go hiking with friends this weekend.  It will be somewhat strenous and should take about 5 hours.  Do you think this is safe to do in the first 5 weeks of pregnancy?

  • I can't tell you if it's safe or not... but I will say that I would not do it.

  • Thanks, that is what we were leaning towards.  We just got our BFP a few days ago and are beginning our journey and want to stay safe.

  • Lurking...but my friend and I summitted Pikes Peak at 14k feet when I was 6-7 wks along with LO. I asked my OB before hand, and she didn't have a problem with it as long as we took it slow, drank lots of water, ate a bunch of protein, and rested when I needed to.

  • I really think its ok if you go but then again you should listen to your body. I was really active before becoming pregnant and the doc said its ok to stay like that as long as you were doing it before.

  • I spoke with my OB about exercise, and she said she would prefer if I avoided high impact exercise, and said to try to keep my heart rate under 150 BPM.  I go to exercise classes, and my instructor said that high impact just means anything that requires both of your feet to leave the floor (jumping jacks, jump ropes, high knees, etc.).  I don't know if his explanation was just in regards to the classes, but I would think hiking would be fine.  Worst case scenario, you just won't be able to go as fast as you normally do.

  • I think it would depend on lot on how physically active you were before you got pregnant. If you routinely went on five hour hikes, you probably won't stress yourself out too much by doing it again.

This seems to be in-line with the advice I have been reading.  I am asking my doctor this week about if I can continue or not.

Is there anyway you can take a few more rests on the hike or go slower?  Maybe the hike usually takes 5 hours, but this time it takes you 7?

  • I think you should be totally fine doing that. I'm about five weeks along, and I'm hitting the gym 5x a week for 2 hours. There really should be no reason for you not to be able to hike- the baby is the size of an appleseed, and hiking is hardly high impact...

  • if you are somewhat fit and have maintaining some kind of exercise routine, then sure!!  I think it is more than ok!   In fact, I think it is something to be applauded.  Just make sure you drink enough water, and don't overexert yourself (as in, take a rest when you need it).

  • If you are even asking this question, that tells me you don't think it is a good idea..  Strenuous and pregnancy don't really mix.  Yes, exercise is safe for healthy pregnancies, but 5 hours straight??  Seems a bit much.  I would personally not do it.  I guess you have to ask if the hike is worth risking the baby, ultimately that is the question, right?

  • If you are used to that kind of workout, you should be able to do it.  Many women don't even know they are pregnant in the first 5 weeks and continue to live life normally.

The things you really need to watch are heat and dehydration.  Bring tons of water, lots of food/snacks, and take it slower.  If you need to stop, then stop--definitely be in tune with your body, and don't push yourself.  FWIW, I've haven't stopped running yet since I have been pregnant, and I didn't last time either, and had a great pregnancy and bounced right back pp.  Exercise and being physically fit in pregnancy is so beneficial, as long as you do it within safe limits.
