July 2011 Moms

Thought my water broke yesterday

But, I am assuming it wasn't. I wasn't about to be the crazy lady who rushed to L&D just to find out it was likely shower water.

But it was unnerving (I am 35 weeks today....and -lol- I NEED 2 more paychecks before I go into labor darn it!!!!!!!!!)

I got out of shower and dried off (very well). Felt a trickle. Well, I assumed I peed because, let's face it, that happens. So I sat for a few minutes. But, it really didn't make sense because I had just peed after the shower. So I decided to "feel" up there (tmi, sorry). When I did that, It released a gush of clear liquid. So now I start getting ready. I tell Ronnie my water may have broke...so we go deliver Father's day cards to our dads and come back to the house so I can lay down and see if any more fluid comes out.

No more fluid. *but* baby IS a lot lower today, and I felt like I had to , um, "poo" all day long yesterday (pressure in butt).

Still, it was a wake up call that I have NOTHING ready still. (And I NEED 2 more paychecks before I can have this baby!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Re: Thought my water broke yesterday

  • Hmmm, based on that description- I would actually call my OB and have them check.  It is a super-easy test.  Better to be safe.

  • Well, I have that nitrazine paper at the medical office I work. So I did that first thing this morning. It indicated all is well.

SO...I decided that if I have any more pressure or any other "non-identifiable" fluid, I'll go in (I am 5 mins from my doc/hospital)

I'd call my OB about that, too. Hopefully all is well! :)

  • I'm a second-timer and *I'd* have gone to L&D to get checked.  Or at least called my OB first thing this morning.

Better to be the crazy lady at L&D than sorry.

This is my 4th. So I have a healthy fear of being "THAT" lady with 3 kids already who had to be told "It was shower water....and you need to poop...have a colace". I know damn well they see that every day. But STILL. I am an RN also. So that doesn't help. (We are a stubborn species)

But I have my plan (as I said above). Plus I work with a former OB nurse, too. I want to call OB just to *report* it...but I don't want to be told to come in just to sit in L&D for hours to find out it was nothing. Maybe if I felt more fluid and wasn't bone-dry "down there". PLus my nitrazine tape shows perfect, regular vaginal PH.

(and all I can sit here and think is....we don't have the damn crib up OR a going home outfit OR a name OR the house clean....aaaccckkk!!!) How can I be expected to work under such stress?

LOL. My other nurse friend is a former L&D nurse. She is the reigning queen of horror stories.

I figure....if she ain't screaming at me to go NOW, then I am good! LOL (since she is also a worry wart and anal about everything)

Did you check for ferning too?

  • There wasn't any liquid to check for ferning. It was hard enough to get enough for the litmus paper! My doc doesn't usually check for ferning when she does nitrazine test, either. She just makes decision based on whether it is A) OBVIOUSLY the water or B) What the strip shows.

Since yesterday at about 1 pm and all the way through now, I have been dry.  I'm gonna go with final answer: shower water.

That seems to be the nurse-y consensus around the office, too. I will, however, be staying on "heightened alert".

  • I am just confused how shower water would get "up there".

Were you doing headstands in the shower? Stick out tongue

  • I'm going to agree with all the other replies & say that you should go get checked. Your baby's health (and your own) should trump any fear of looking like "the crazy pregnancy lady."

Have you had the GBS test yet? I'm sure you know that if you test positive for GBS, you would need to go in immediately after your water breaks to get on antibiotics... I'm assuming since you're only 35 weeks, you have not yet been tested.

I have to agree with this. I've never had shower water go up there and then just fall out. I wouldn't care if this was a FTM or a 4th time mom, I'd call my OB. Nurses who worked for OB's aren't your OB. And not all RN's are a stubborn breed.

  • All of your responses/rebuttals are extremely frustrating, and leaving me wanting to bang my head on my desk. 4 kids or not, this is just a stupid discussion.

I too am confused over how shower water would just lodged up your vagina and then gush out when prodded. Newton's laws prove this theory invalid.

    Just saying...

  • What's the point of this post? You just wanted to let us know you thought your water broke, but it didn't, but maybe it did, but who knows because you didn't call the doctor? Ok...

Also, what's up with the LOL to Littleprettyx's comment regarding knowing a heartbreaking story where a woman's water broke in the shower? That's funny?? I found that very insensitive and ridiculous.

I agree with Five_letter, this is a stupid discussion.
