Any experience with Kaiser Hayward/ Santa Clara?

Hello ladies...

I was wondering if any of you had any experience with Kaiser Hayward or Santa Clara?

I recently went in for my tour of L & D at Kaiser Hayward and they were crazy busy. In fact, they kicked us out after less than a minute in the room. The nurse also mentioned that when you share a recovery room, husbands are not allowed to stay the night.

A friend just had her baby at Kaiser Santa Clara and she said that she did not have this experience. I was wondering if she was just lucky or if Santa Clara truly have better accommodations?

My OB will not deliver me and I live somewhere between the two so I both are an option at this point.

  • A lot of us here have delivered at Santa Clara, so hopefully you'll get a few different reviews.  I had a great experience there.  The nursing staff was wonderful (as were the OBs that I had, although you definitely spend more time with the nurses!!).  I'm pretty sure that all of the recovery rooms are private at Santa Clara, but don't quote me on that.  I was surprised at how small my recovery room was, but honestly... the fact that it was private made ALL the difference in the world!  There was a rocker in each room and a pull-out chair/bed for the partner to sleep in.  The food was even decent.  I would recommend it!

  • My sil delivered at Hayward almost four years ago. The care was good, no complaints, but sharing a room really sucked. The birthing suite was really large and comfortable, but then going to the shared recovery room was a huge downgrade. Since she had a roommate her dh couldn't stay the night. They did try to alternate, or work out a system that you get at least one day in the room by yourself, but that's not guaranteed.

  • I delivered in SC and had a private room. I believe all the rooms are private since they built the new hospital, at least in the maternity ward. I live in the tri-valley area and drive to SC for all my ob appointments because I love my doc and I want a private room. I also spent time in the walnut creek maternity ward and had a private room, but from what I understand that was pure luck and they only have 1 or 2 private rooms.
    siggy should be here!

Hayward has a better rep for natural labor, and is the only bay area Kaiser certified as baby-friendly, for what that's worth.
  • I delivered at KP Santa Clara and had a great experience as well, all the OBs and Nurses were great.  The Mom & Baby unit was full when I left L&D, so they put me in the Pediatrics unit with a private room as well.  According to my childbirth class...most rooms are private, only a handful are shared.

It has to do with BFing...I think everyone has to go through training and such.  South Sac has the same certification.
