Babies: 6 - 9 Months

babysitter question

My babysitter has a son who a sophmore in highschool( i guess he is a junior now that school is over) well, this summer he has made a special lacrosse team for the county. i think it's great, but now she has given me a bunch of days that I have to pick DD up early. Between 2 and 3 and I don't get out of work until 6 or 7. It's really inconvinent to have someone pick her up, especially when we started with her she knew that we would need her to watch DD until 6 at least. A part of me wants to look for another babysitter who will understand that it's not so easy for DH or I to leave work to pick her up early, and we don't have anyone who can get her. WWYD? BTW..she also has a daughter in College who could drive him to practice, but sitter likes to sit and watch them practice.

Re: babysitter question

  • I suppose if I were your sitter, my own kids would still take priority so I am not shocked.  I would look for another sitter or maybe use a reputable daycare as you wouldn't have to deal with this type of thing.

  • Unless she is absolutely amazing in all other facets, I might start shopping around for a new sitter. It sounds to me like she's not that interested in having a job as a babysitter if she wants to take off to watch just the practices. I can understand her leaving early to watch a game, but a practice? Really.

Is your baby the only one she watches, or is she inconveniencing others too?

  • I agree that my kids would be priority, but they aren't little kids anymore. Besides, her husband doesn't work and like I said, she has a daughter that also drives. She loves DD with out a doubt, but it's starting to become really annoying. She has also given me weeks were she is not available and there are at least 5 of them between now and August. I just think if someone hires you to do a job, you should do it. This may sound wrong, but I feel like, since we are paying her, we shouldn't have to re arrange our schedule to meet her needs. She watches a few kids in the am, but DD is the only full day baby she watches. I think i may look for a day care or someone else. I can't continue to leave work early or ask others to leave work early. Thank you for those that replied.

Totally agree. Hope something works out for you!

  • Personally, I think it comes with the territory of hiring a baby sitter rather than going the daycare route.  Her kids take priority, doesn't matter how old they are.  When I was in high school I wanted both of my parents at all of my sporting/music events.  Didn't matter that I was older.

However, you have the right to be upset.  You and your H work and you were counting on her to be there to watch your LO, as was agreed.  So, if she's not worth the inconvenience I would start looking for another sitter, but keep in mind that any time you get a baby sitter rather than a daycare you're really running the same risk (just that some baby sitter will be more professional than others).
