Maternity bra or built-in bra?

Which is better, buying a maternity bra or buying a camisole with a "built-in" bra? I can't stand to wear my current bras any longer -- too tight, I feel like I can't breath, and I even feel sick when wearing them. I am on a tight budget right now and hoping for any advice before I go shopping this weekend. I'm thinking the tank top built-in bra sounds the best, but curious if anyone has felt similar symptoms as me above and enjoyed a maternity bra.

Re: Maternity bra or built-in bra?

  • You might just need a bigger band and/or cup size.  Your ribcage expands when pg, so you go up in size.  I'm normally a 32B, and I went up to 36D last pregnancy.  I got some maternity/nursing bras in the beginning, but then when I needed to go up another size I just got regular bras in bigger sizes.  It's cheaper.

A built-in bra may be ok if you don't need a lot of support, but it might feel tight too because it's not really adjustable.  I had a top on like this yesterday and it was really uncomfortable.

  • You could try the nursing tank tops that are pretty affordable at Target or Walmart.  That way you can use them again when baby comes.  You may find that you aren't as sore and swollen in second tri and can go back to your regular stuff for a while.  I've been wearing my old nursing tanks and non-underwire cotton bras the last few weeks, too.

  • If you are on a tight budget then maybe you could just buy an attachment. They sell them at motherhood, mimi, destination maternity, ect. Its a bra extender. That should buy you some more time.

A tank with a built in bra will work on a budget, but it sounds like you just need a bigger size. I was a 34 B pre-pregnancy, and by the end I was in a 38 D.
