Someone got G one of the kid tuff camera's but the pics were super crappy. I started letting him use my old point and shoot (a kodak) around age 3 or 3.5. He understood not throwing it or anything like that.

We bought one for our piece for the holidays a few years back. All the reviews on the "kid" cameras were terrible, so we just scavanged Craigslist and got a decent point and shoot, used, for not a lot of money.
We've just handed down our old point and shoots to the kids. One has finally died so I think I'll look either for sales where they are $40 and under (saw one black friday) or get a used one off craigslist.
I have an old Canon point and shoot (it's from like 2004 I think) tha you can have if you want. We'll never use it, and it's just clutter at this point. PM or email me if you're interested, and I'll find it (we're in the process of sorting/packing right now).
I have an older olympus that I don't use anymore. It probably isn't great compared to what they have today, but I am sure better than the kids cameras mentioned above. it is also a solid camera compared to the slim fits... as in I think it would take a bit to break. The best thing--it takes just double a batteries and not special ones.
If you would like it for your kid, I would love to pass it on (and get it off the floor of my closet). Let me know if you are interested ronidittli at gmail dot com.
i carry the olympus stylus tough 8010 in my diaper bag. it's my second of that series. in addition to taking 30 minutes of hd video (probably more if i got a card for it) and being waterproof up to 30ft or something, it's virtually indestructible.
the prior one i had (the 770sw) i took to work with me on saturday mornings: daycare at a gym, and regularly handed it off to 3 and 4 year olds. I upgraded - not because it died, but because i wanted a new one - and to my knowledge, the teenagers who use it as their "pool party" camera are still using it.
so it's more spendy than a "kids" camera, but you'll get more use out of it and the pictures won't suck. unless your kid, like mine, enjoys taking pictures of his thumb ;-)

I'm planning on doing the same for our kids.
