Changing pad question

I'm just putting a changing bad on top of the dresser in the nursery and it comes with the safety belt attached. Are you guys leaving it there? I can't imagine actually using it since I would never put her up there without keeping my hands on her. Do you just cut it off then?

Also, the little tabs that connect the pad to the dresser in the back are on the wrong size for the way I would like it to face (its a 3 sided contoured pad so it has a top and bottom). Are those really necessary or can I just skip them and put a piece of gripper mat under the pad to keep it from slipping?

Re: Changing pad question

  • I've only ever used a gripper mat. It doesn't completely stop it from moving, but it's good enough. The baby is never alone up there anyway.

  • I never used the straps, but tucked them at the sides. I didn't want to cut them off because eventually I will sell everything when I'm done having kids and I figured if I cut them off, someone won't buy it, lol.

  • I never used the belt i just tucked it under the sides of the changing pad cover. (maybe I should just cut it off for DD) I did not use grippers on DS's dresser since it had sides to hold the pad but will when I move it to DD's dresser since it is just a flat top.

  • We attached the safety strap to the back of the dresser.

Re the belt, be careful if you just put the straps underneath the changing pad and there is no cushion between them and the dresser- depending on the wood of your dresser, it can scratch or even gouge it (I speak from first-hand experience).

  • I never used the belt for DS and just tucked it into the cover.  I just noticed that there are dents and huge marks on his dresser from time when they were not tucked in all the way so now I cut them off for DD.

  • I tried using the buckle at first, but its a pain because you can't lift LO up to make sure their heiny is clean.  I just tuck it under.  My changing table has sides to it so I don't have a pad under it.

    This, exactly.

  • I was thinking this same exact thing last night when I put the changing pad on top of his dresser. I think I'm just gonna tuck it in and make sure it's tucked somewhere that it won't scratch. I think eventually we'll get an actually changing table, and I would not be too pleased with scratches.

  • I was given the changing pad from my SIL and she had cut off the strap.  I wouldnt probably have used it anyway.

  • a close friend gave me her changing pad, that we will use on a flat dresser. She had cut the strap off, except for the one that anchors to the back of the dresser. We did anchor it....maybe you can put a screw through the strap with it facing the way you want it.

  • I plan to cut off all straps so they don't scratch the dresser.  I won't be leaving her up there alone anyway.
