Success after IF

When will they drop a nursing session?

I'll RP this during the day, I'm just curious now.  Boys are 7 months today, eating 1 solid meal a day, and still nursing 6 times a day.  Sometimes 7 if they are fussy before their morning nap.

That is 12-14 nursing sessions a day, and I'd like to know if there is any reduction in sight.   I'm exhausted.

Re: When will they drop a nursing session?

  • I just went back through my notes and by seven months, DS was nursing/bottle five times a day plus however much he woke up at night. As they pick up on their solids, you could probably drop one! I dropped the after work one first (it was his fifth of the day)

  • I don't completely remember when they started dropping sessions, but I'm sure it was by 9 months.  As soon as they were eating 2-3 meals a day they nursed a little less, and our lives got busier so they were less focused on nursing.  They still nurse 4 times a day, but it is not for long so it doesn't feel like much effort.

I'm sorry you're exhausted by it!  When you say 12-14 sessions a day, it does sound nuts.  But you are doing an amazing job!

I am fine with 4 or 5, so I hope to get down there soon.

They nurse at 8, 11, down for their nap at 1, 4, 6:30 or so, then down for the night at 7:30.

I give them solids at 5:30 or 6, and I was really hoping I could skip their 6:30 nursing session.  But they scream and cry until I nurse them.  I would love to be able to go out to dinner with the kids and not bring my nursing cover and hover in the bathroom.  I am hoping that "dinner" will be enough to get them to bedtime soon.

  • We've been doing solids for one month now at lunch and dinner and I still haven't dropped a nursing session although we started solids due to a slow down in Vivi's weight gain.  I know that's not what you wanted to hear but the good news is that the nursing sessions are starting to get significantly shorter.  What used to take 40 minutes now takes 20 or less.

Your boys are a little older, hopefully they can drop a session soon.  I would be exhausted too.

  • I am still waiting. She is 11 months, eats 3 solids meals a day, and I still nurse her on demand, which is still as much as she always did, it seems. I don't really have super specific nursing sessions, just whenever she asks for it, but i don't really notice a reduction yet.

I think it just totally depends on the kid. Henry cut down to five sessions around six months. Eleanor has been nursing five times a day almost from the start (and I think I could probably cut her down to four now if I tried).

Have you tried encouraging them to go longer between feeds?

  • I just counted, and my guy is doing 8+ per day right now, plus 2+ overnight. Can't imagine doing 12-14! It seems like your schedule with dinner in the middle "should" work to drop that 6:30 feeding... Hopefully they'll start agreeing with us soon! ;)

Mine went down to 4 times a day a few weeks ago.  He's small and gets a lot of solids now.  He did drop 2 at once so relief could be on the way for you.  He initiated it.

that's the session that we dropped first...it was easiest since he'd recently had a bottle, solids were right around that time, and he was going to be nursing within an hour for bed.  good luck!!!  I think I'd encourage dropping that one...you must be exhausted!!
  • Anna dropped a session when she dropped a nap....Anna always ate after sleeping (at first first wake, after each nap) and then before bed. So 3 naps a day was 5 nursing sessions, and when she dropped to two naps per day, she only nursed 4 times.
