Trying to remain calm

I don't post a ton but I was hoping somebody has some insight.

I'm 33 weeks pregnant.  For the last 5 or so weeks I have been on bedrest.  Not strict, but I'm really not supposed to run errands, do housework or have my daughter for long periods of time due to Baby B and her growth steadily declining from her sister.

I'm going for weekly ultrasounds and being seen all the time.  Well today we saw that Baby B is now down to the 3rd percentile (she was at 7th two weeks ago).  The rest of her tests look fine but they are seeing an incompetent placenta.  It isn't horrible, but not optimal.

My problem is that I was under  the impression when the percentile got so low, they would take the babies.  Then the Dr comes in and acts like it isn't a big deal.  I'm usually seen by 2 different MFM Dr's.  The one is extremely strict and overly cautious and the other seems much more laid back.  I'd prefer to have a Dr that was in between both of them.  I have been seeing the laid back Dr much more because the other Dr is partially retired and isn't available a ton.

What would you think?  I ask a ton of questions, but 3rd percentile?  That seems so low.  Then I think maybe I'm just being dramatic.  Does anyone else have experience with this and how low did the baby go before they were delivered?  I'm now scheduled for twice per week testing, but I'm just feeling very upset, emotional, confused and scared.

Sorry this got so long but thanks for any insight you can give.

Re: Trying to remain calm

  • The good news is that you are 33 weeks.  Landry and Hudson were born at 34.6 weeks and they did just fine.   Landry was small at 4.2 lbs and Hudson weighed 5.9.  They were in the NICU for two weeks for eating and growing.

If you need to call the dr tomorrow, do it.  Just ask the dr to set it to you strait.  I would imagine that they expect you to go into labor soon.  If it comes push to shove, I would have to think that they would take them...they just want to cook them a little more.  Take care of you right now.  Do what they tell you to do.

    Keep us posted....

  • I don't have experience with an incompetent placenta but I just wanted to say that I'm sorry that you're going through this, I can imagine that it must be very stressful.  I think you should call the doctor tomorrow and ask for clarification on their decision.  Is there a reason that they are not taking the babies now?  If so, what are they (do they not feel that it is imperitive yet?)  That will hopefully ease your mind and make you feel more comfortable with how they are deciding to proceed.

My boys were born at 32 weeks 6 days (so literally just a few hours shy of 33 weeks) and they were in the NICU for 2 weeks but they did great and they are happy, healthy 14 month olds now.  We'll be thinking about you!

  • are they mo or di (just curious if you're being monitored for TTTS or anything)?

i would call tomorrow to get an explanation and just feel better!

  • Oh you are doing great!!  And try to do just what you said...remain calm!  If there was a need to get the babies out now they would...try not to get too wrapped up in the "numbers game"...I know it is easier said than done! And if you are still concerned, call the office and leave a message for the other doctor to call you.  :)
  • My A dropped down below 10%, and they took the babies the next day.  I was 34.5 weeks though, and he'd been up as high as 70% as one point.  It turned out to be somewhat of a false alarm since he wasn't as small as they thought.  As with infant growth charts, percentile is more a tool to use against the same baby.  If your baby B has always been small, that's less of a concern than if they dramatically fell that low.

  • I had TTTS and IUGR issues.  I had a growth u/s had 32 weeks where my MFM said the littlest baby needed to at least be on the growth charts (5%).  She wasn't and we delivered.  She also had cord blood flow issues though, so it was more than just her weight that pushed us to delivery.

I would definitely call your doctor and find out what the plan is and what the tipping points are.  Growth u/s how often?  If she goes below 3% will you deliver?  Basically, at what point is she better off outside you than inside you.
