NB Stash - Does this make sense?

I've been lurking for a few weeks now trying to learn all I can about CD'ing, and reading your reviews and recommendations.  Thank you so much!  After reading the FAQ's and everything i've learned, I put together a list of what I think my NB stash might be.  Does this seem right:

24 GMD orange edge PF's

6 GMD workhorse fitteds

1 Sbish OBF fitted

4 KL0

1 Thirsties Duo Fab Fitted

1 Bummi's Super Whisper Wrap

1 Thirsties Duo cover size 1

1 Blueberries Mini Cover

2 snappi's

2 BG 3.0s/BG Newborn AIO

2 GroVia Newborn AIO

2 Mums Bums AIO

2 FuzziBuns perfect size S

2 BG 4.0

2 Blueberry Mini Deluxe

I wanted a variety but does that seem like too many in any area (fully realizing that I probably won't have all of this day one and will add/subtract what works best)?  I added up prices and it looks like that will be about $450, does that seem right for a NB stash?  I know a few of these are OS, but that does seem like a lot for a short period of time.  Also, I'm starting to look into day care options after i go back to work (I'll probably have 8 weeks off), and it looks like AIOs and pockets will be the day care diaper, will the 12 AIOs and pockets I have listed here be enough for day care purposes?

Thank you so much for your input, I really do appreciate it and I'm so glad you all have been here as a resource for me.

Re: NB Stash - Does this make sense?

  • That seems like an awful lot to spend on a newborn stash.  Many people will do just prefolds and covers for newborns to cut down on the cost.  I would probably skip getting newborn AIO and probably the pockets.  You baby will fit into BG 4.0 pockets around 10-12 pounds so should be able to fit into these before they go to day care.  I would probably get a BG AIO in a size small since it fits up until a larger size giving you more time in them.  I also see that you have lots of fitteds and prefolds.  I believe you have 36 which would be a good stash size for a newborn.  In my opinion,  you don't have enough covers to go with this many covers/fitteds.  You could probably cut down how many prefolds you have or cut down the number of AIO and pockets for newborn and get more covers.  I would save the money and invest in AIO or pockets in a larger size since they grow so quickly as newborns.  I have spent around $500 for my entire stash.  If you're worried about the money, there are cheaper ways to do it.  If you're not as worried about the money, you can always sell off the newborn stuff to fund the later stuff.

  • I spent a small fortune on my newborn stash, thinking that I'd love to have a wide variety of types and brands to use.  It's worked out fine for us, and I do like having been able to try the various types that are out there, but I wish I'd spent a lot less and gone with fewer systems.  I've learned that I actually love my GMD prefolds (which I thought I'd hate), and I never reach for the KL0s that I thought I'd use all the time.  I don't like fitteds as much as I thought I would (although I might once I start using wool), and the AIOs leak way more frequently than the prefolds do.

If I could go back, I'd invest in 24-36 prefolds, Snappis, and a few covers (Thirsties XS are my current favourites) and see if I liked those before spending a lot more on other types.  I'd probably throw in 4 AIOs or so for going out (the bumGenius newborns have been decent, but we can't leave her in them for too long without leaks).  You only use newborn diapers for so long, and you can spend the money you save on diapers that'll last a lot longer.

Also, if you have 8 weeks off work, I doubt that your newborn diapers will still fit.  Any diapers that you buy for daycare will probably be one-size.

  • Looks like you need more covers.  I think having 36 is a good number so the 24 prefolds and the rest fitteds is fine.  I wouldn't worry too much about the next size because you don't know how big your baby will be.  DD is just fitting into one-size diapers at 2.5 months old.

  • I'd add three covers and drop the sized AIOs personally. I used all prefolds for the NB phase and it was great. He started fitting into the OS and FB smalls around 6 weeks, so I think those are worth keeping to try different styles and see what works. Don't worry too much about the next phase yet. I know it is hard because it seems easier to think about before you have a newborn, but there is not a lot you can do until you see what works for your LO.

  • I, too, spent a small fortune on a newborn stash - and honestly we use prefolds and covers during the day (I have 32 GMD orange edge prefolds and about 6 or more covers - but half get left upstairs and half are downstairs for the most part, and LO doesn't poo every day).  I have a few fitteds that we use with wool or covers at night, and it's worked well.

FWIW - I also have Lil Joeys, a GroVia AIO, an XS Fuzzibunz decorating my downstairs diapering area.  I can't get a good fit and my DH won't use them because he's been peed on twice (Lil Joey and FB) - he uses prefolds, too!  I think it was a fit issue - but I just like the prefolds and fitteds.  Prefolds are nice when you change them every 10 minutes 3x in a row because they pee, then poop, then pee again :) (Maybe my LO just likes screwing with me, though!).

Your stash sounds great, though - it's how we are figuring out what we like, and it's worked well so far!

  • Thanks so much for your replies everyone, that's exactly what I was looking for.  I guess I thought I needed a wide variety because I'm a FTM and I had no idea how long the "newborn" stage would last.  I'll cut back in a few areas and just wait and see what works.  It's just so hard because I want to buy a bunch of cute diapers now!

    Thanks again!

  • Maybe look at the jillians closet deal.... You can try the different types without spending a small fortune. I did this through a local lady. We have prefolds and three covers. Some fitteds. A wool cover. About 5 fb xs appockets, a couple other brands as well (bottom bumpers, happy heiny, another I ca t remember). It's really helped me see what I like and now I start buying. :-)
