Moms of reflux babies

Did the introduction of solid food begin to help the spitting up problem?

I ask because I am almost out of Zantac, but I don't want to get a refill before we go to the next well baby check up on Tuesday.

He still spits up occasionally, but he is medicated morning and night so I am not sure if it is improving with age or it is all attributed to the medicine.  Would you begin to tapper off the Zantac to see if he still has a problem?  Any advice would be great.

  • we kept medicating until just a couple of weeks ago...we started by cutting out certain doses...we kept the middle of the day dose for the last one (by rec. of our pedi).  We tried tapering a few times and ended up going back on the meds each time because he woudl start spitting up a lot again..and solid food spitup is way grosser than milk.  I think we started being able to really drop doses around 8 months.  Give it a try and see what happens :)

  • I don't remember exactly when our pedi had us wean him off the Zantac.  I think it was around 4-5 months.  We just cut out one dose a day for several days and then cut out the next dose.  He never showed any discomfort so we were able to get him completely off.  He still spit up some, but he no longer screamed like he was in pain.  I'm not sure when the spitting up completely stopped because I didn't notice it, it just gradually happened less often.
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

  • Not really - but hers has been much worse compared to our other DD. She's up to 2 ml of Zantac 2-3 times a day (we haven't had to give it 3 times a day in a while, though). I'm hoping at her well-baby visit this Friday to talk to the pedi about starting to decrease her dose in the hopes of getting her off of it.

With our first DD, she outgrew the reflux around 8-9 months, so hang in there!

  • We took DS1 off of zantac at 6 months and he was fine.  Tried w/ #2 at 4 months and he was miserable - tried again at 5 months and he was fine.  Both had silent reflux.  DS2 was diagnosed as "maybe" reflux/ "definitely" colic.

  • I kept my son on Zantac until he was 9 months old.  My ped told me around 6 months I could try to ween him off but he didn't do well. I would definately try to half the dosage and see how he does. Reflux is reflux so if he is going to have it , he will have it either way.
