My boss is a scatterbrained passive-aggressive neurotic ex lawyer who opened a doggy daycare/boarding facility. She wanted my vet tech experience on staff with her, so she asked me to come work for her and offered me a certain hourly rate. She offered to have Maya come into work with me and we would split the cost of a baby sitter between our 3 kids. She assured me that the nursery would be hazard and dog free and well babyproofed. I was to take a manager position and run the daycare how I saw fit.
Well, it has all gone to hell. She first turned her office, which was adjacent to the nursery, into the small dog room, and only put a bar gate up in the doorway between the nursery and her office. Dogs were jumping the gate and almost landing on my baby, peeing on the gate and pee was going through it into the nursery, and the bars were set wide enough for her to put her arms through and potentially get bitten. I put up barriers that weekend, but it didn't matter. She moved the dogs out and made that room now the grooming room. So there is tons of hair and dander flying through the air into the nursery now, not to mention the deafening dryers that are used, so I put a mattress up in the doorway and secured it to block out the hair and noise. This was on Sunday. On Monday, I come in, and she has moved her desk and all her shelving into the nursery, moved all the baby play stuff into a small corner, and has tons of electrical wires exposed all over the place, and all over the floor. Lots of things are on the shelves and on top, and one of the outlets was sparking and smoking it was so overloaded. And no room for Maya to do anything in there but get injured.
None of this was ever mentioned to me at all. She never pulled me aside to let me know of her plans and maybe I might want to see if there was a safer place I could leave Maya. Nothing. She has repeatedly put my baby and her health in danger, with no concern for her safety. She is the one who told me she had this set up just for me and her children!
Then she pulls me aside and criticizes the job i have been doing. She told me just the week before that she doesn't want any cleaning done until the daycare is shut down for the night. She just wants us sitting out there with the dogs. Her criticism is that she is paying me way too much to sit out there with the dogs and that I should be cleaning in the meantime. She said she wanted to see more protocols set by me, but I have set a protocol for everything I can think of in the back, but she doesn't enforce them or support them, especially when I am not there! I only work 3 afternoons a week and a couple hours by myself on sunday. How can I be an effective manager if my boss doesn't support my endeavors. She sets the example and if she is not enforcing what I have put in place when I am gone, why would any of the other employees follow it either?
She slacks off and cuts corners with the care of the animals all the time, she engages in risky behavior with people's pets, and is not honest with their owners. A puppy was attacked by a bigger dog, lacerations in its mouth, broken teeth, bleeding out the nose. She asked my professional advice if this puppy should see a vet. I said YES. She didn't end up telling them anything, and told me to pretend it never happened.
Then she tells me that she doesn't mind if I breastfeed on the clock, but if the total time adds up to more than 30 minutes, please punch out.
I don't breastfeed Maya at work. I bring bottles of EBM. She is just grasping for reasons to cast me as inadequate because she no longer wants to pay me as much as she did. She did the same thing to my mom who also worked for her. My mom evaluated all the dogs to make sure they were suitable for daycare. She told my mom that what she is doing isn't worth the money she is paying her (bullshit, it was the most important function of the job for liability reasons) and she fired her. Now she is pulling the same *** on me, but after the crap she did to the nursery and Maya, I was done.
I wrote her a huge email laying it all out there and told her I wouldn't be coming back. I was going to put in my 2 weeks, but she would make my life a living hell, and I have no place to put Maya. My husband has thought she was a horrible boss for a long time now and has wanted me to quit, but respected me decision to stay. He is happy to have me just stay home again, and I am happy to be done with the crap.
