Cloth Diapering

Bleach

Ok, so I know bleach is a no-no...but we have a yeast rash. I have used TTO and BioKleen Oxygen Bleach Plus GSE, but I'm afraid they're not clean. If I was to use bleach it would be on my newborn prefolds, inserts, and cloth wipes for sure. How would it affect my KL0s, Lil Joeys, and FuzziBunz?? Anyone done this? I'm so frustrated...poor DS has had this off and on since he was 3 days old. Once I get rid of it completely I don't want him to get it again due to me putting him back in CDs. TIA for any help you can offer!

Re: Bleach

  • We're battling yeasties too. I haven't bleached the dipes yet, but I just threw bleach in a hot wash with all of DS's clothes and they all turned out OK. I just made sure to dilute the bleach in the wash water first before putting the clothes in. I'll probably do the same with the diapers ... Though I plan to try the BioKleen + GSE wash first

  • I use Ecover bleach on any used dipes and clothes that come to the house. I haven't had any issues yet!

What do you use to fight the yeast rash itself? I can't seem to beat it!

  • I used bleach w/yeast on FBs and BGs to no ill effect.  I think it's probably long-term bleach use that they're cautioning against.

As for the rash itself, we tried everything.  Natural (dilute TTO, grapefruit seed extract, apple cider vinegar) and OTC (monistat, jock itch cream), but in the end the only thing that did it was Vusion, a prescription cream.  But a warning: that stuff is CRAZY expensive.  We paid $90, and that was with a $200 insurance credit or something.  But the stuff works.

    Good luck!

Do you dilute the bleach first? I have a toploader HE machine that has a spot for bleach, so I'm wondering if I should use that or not. One more question...possibly silly...regular bleach or color safe only?

He had a prescription for Nystatin...which cleared it up, but then it came back and now I can't get rid of it. We got a new prescription today for Nystatin mixed with something else (can't remember off the top of my head). Hopefully that will do it. If not I'll ask about Vusion. I think I'll use some of my TTO on it too. Maybe that will help.

  • I used 1/3 cup bleach when we were battling yeast and just made sure to rinse like crazy. The diapers were fine and LO seemed fine too. GL!

  • I haven't dealt with yeast myself, but I've used bleach on my diapers in my HE FL'er by putting it in the spot for bleach. It washes water through to dilute the bleach when it goes into the washer. I've never had a problem.

I do this on PUL stuff on occasion, too, and that hasn't been a problem. Cotton Babies actually recommends bleaching BG's once a month, so you know it can't be that bad for PUL. You just don't want to do it on every load.

It has to be regular bleach, not color safe. It's the chlorine stuff that kills the nasties.

Thank you! This answers all of my questions! :)
