a traveling WWYD?

Which travel scenerio do you think would be best?

Pros/Cons?

Our plan was to leave for Florida on Sunday around noon.  My husband decided to open the restuarant for the Father's Day holiday and didn't realize that that was the day were were going to leave.  So, he's going in, setting them up, getting them started and then leaving everything to his assistant, head server, and bar manager.

Well, not that many reservations have come in, and he's decided to go ahead and just entrust them with everything.

PCB is about a 10 hour drive with normal stops.  My grandmother lives 2 hours from me in Nashville, which we would pass through.

Thinking of three kids (4y, 2y, 9m)... would you leave Paducah when husband could leave the restaurant after dinner rush (realistically 10pm) drive to Nanny's house, arrive no sooner than midnight and then sleep until a reasonable hour for rest and then drive on...

Or, just go to bed as usual, and then get up early and drive Sunday morning.

Originally, if we'd left around noon or 1 on Sunday, we'd be driving at night in unfamiliar territory.  And, I'd prefer not to drive through the night, although I know some would.

Either way, we would be driving through daylight hours.  And, with 3 kids, I think it will take more like 12 hours.  But, which will help me keep just a little more sanity?

  • let me clarify, b/c I don'tknow how to edit a post.

we would leave SATURDAY night around 10p and drive to Nashville.

  • I would do that and drive to Nashville on Sat.

    Here's a thought.

Could you leave in one car with the kiddos at noon and spend some time with grandma and then have your DH leave after work and meet you there? In the morning you hop in one car and finsih the trip?

That sounds like a great idea.

I would not put my kids in the car at 10 and expect them to sleep through that transition plus another one at midnight.  I know some kids could though but I doubt mine would.  Not my 2 year old anyway.

that is a great idea... except we are having a combo  father's day / birthday GTG at tmy dad's that afternoon.

that is something tothink about though.  If the kids aren't going to sleep then it isn't worth the two hour head start.  We'll probably just leave early Sunday AM.

  • We did a 10 hour trip last summer. We left at 3am and it worked out perfectly. The kids stayed awake for longer than we expected, but both fell asleep around 6. That was good timing becuase DH was able to run in and use the bathroom/cofee/gas while i stayed in the car and vice versa. That saved us some time not taking the kids out of the car. And it was mostly highway driving and we didn't have to make any pit stops when it was super dark out.

They slept until about 11 or so and thats when we stopped for lunch. At that point we only had about 2/2.5 hours left and they were really good those last few hours.

  • DH and I much prefer waking early to drive than driving late.  So, we always pull out early in the morning, no earlier than 5am.  BUT, I would have no problem leaving at 10pm and staying in Nashville because my kids would easily transition while sleeping.  So, I am not much help!

ETA: If you don't do the Nashville stop, can you leave early on Sunday morning since DH is no longer working that day?

  • I would just take turns driving and drive overnight, not stopping at all in Nashville. That's what we like to do!
