Kaiser prenatal

I was told at my appointment on Friday that I will not be seen weekly, and I only have one more appointment until or EDD, which is 2 weeks out.  I just hit 36 weeks today and from my past experience with DS # 1, it's normal to be seen from 36/37 through EDD on a weekly basis.

I emailed my OB (who I've only met 3 times) to see if she agreed, I had seen a NP on Friday - and to request to be seen weekly, based on

How often should I see my doctor during pregnancy?

Your doctor will give you a schedule of all the doctor's visits you should have while pregnant. Most experts suggest you see your doctor:

  • about once each month for weeks 4 through 28
  • twice a month for weeks 28 through 36
  • weekly for weeks 36 to birth

If you are older than 35 or your pregnancy is high risk, you'll probably see your doctor more often

What has been your experience with Kaiser?  I had Blue Cross or Blue Shield with DS # 1.

Re: Kaiser prenatal

  • I was seen weekly from week 36 until week 42.

  • That is what I thought, I hope my OB will agree and set me up for weekly appointments, if not I am going to request midwives from here out and get a new OB /NP team.
  • That seems odd to me for Kaiser.  They are usually pretty consistent with their policies across the board.  I was seen weekly from 36 weeks on.

  • I didn't have weekly appointments- I was seen at 36, 38, and 40.  I was really surprised when I was 38 weeks and I didn't have another appt. until my due date!  2 weeks is a long time when you're at the end of your pregnancy!  I was confused because it seemed like ladies here had weekly appointments in the last month, but not me (I went to Kaiser Campbell/Santa Clara).

  • With M I was seen at 32 weeks, 36 weeks and then 38 and then 39.  It seems from my experience that when things were going well my doctor didn't see me as often.  I wouldn't worry about it and honestly don't feel the need to go all the time but if you want to be seen more I would ask.

  • I would have had weekly Dr visits at 36-40 weeks as well and it seems odd to me that some Kaisers wouldn't do that.
  • I think thats the norm for Kaiser...but I dont know 100% since my situation is a bit different

  • That is the norm for Kaiser (at least in our area).  All of my prenatal appts are scheduled, and I have 32, 36, 38, and 40 left.  Nothing more.

This surprises me b/c the girl I took Bradley classes from started going to a South Sac area MW/OB after her 32 week (she started with a team in Roseville), and she was only seen at 36, 38, and 40 (and then of course a bunch since then since she's at 41w3d now).

  • From what I've seen and heard, Kaisers do differ from location to location. I was seen every two weeks too for the last month (also Santa Clara). I think if I had gone past my EDD I would have gone in for weekly NSTs though. Definitely not a bad thing to request more frequent visits if that would make you more comfortable though.

Interesting...my OB is at the Elk Grove offices not South Sac, but still...weird. I even went back and looked at my calendar and I did for sure have them at 34, 36, 37, 38 and I delivered at 39 weeks.

  • I think it depends on your doctor.  My doctor has consistently asked to see me every 4 weeks (when I believe most do 6 weeks until the third trimester) and I'm not a high risk pregnancy.  With my first pregnancy I saw him every two weeks from 32 weeks on and then one week past my due date as well.  My experience has always been that I can set up the appointments whenever I want though. I just set them up when I leave at the reception desk and they ask me when I want to come back.

They definitely do. Our well check schedule is totally different at one location than it was at our original location. And on top of that, the individual docs have their own preferences.

With DD & DS I was seen either weekly or every other week so I can't really say what the norm would be, but with DD I was seen at least once a week until 36 weeks...and then I got a break and she only made me come every other week, lol!

  • I wouldn't worry about it. It seems like Kaiser is spacing out appointments more than other providers if there are no issues. I was supposed to be only seen every four weeks but then there were some concerns about her being too small so I was seen more often.
