1st Trimester

My sciatica is killing me!!!!

I haven't had any pain in several months but I have put on some cushion around my midsection (I am 11 weeks Sunday).  I wonder if this is part of the cause.  I can't bend down and straighten up or even move my foot from the break to the gas in my car without it causing a horribly sharp pain.  I feel like I can't do anything without having horrible pain.  Is there anything that helps with this???  I know we can't take ibuprofen, aleve, etc.

Re: My sciatica is killing me!!!!

  • I hated finding that nerve during my 1st pregnancy! I was walking with my husband and all of a sudden it started hurting. It hurt from my hip to knee from about 28 weeks on. The only thing I ever found that helped was rest.

Sorry you're in pain! Hope you find some relief!

  • I'm sorry you're in pain.  I had the same issues with my last pregnancy and hoping it doesn't flare up again.  I actually went to physical therapy.  They had me do a lot of exercises/stretches to help strengthen my hip and leg muscles.  It helped enormously.  I remember doing a lot of hip flexes and leg raises.  Maybe you could google some?  Sorry I can't remember exactly what I did, but it definitely helped.

  • No advice for you, but I feel your pain! I have horrible problems with my sciatica pre-pregnancy & I am dreading the moment when it becomes a factor again! :( Hang in there!
  • Look up some yoga poses/stretches for your sciatica.  I did yoga for about 3 years before LO #1 and continued up until a week before she was born.  Best thing I did for myself while preg.  I rarely had any back/hip pain and when I did, I'd do the stretches and be good as new!

  • I had this problem last week...it lasted a whole week and was miserable. Tylenol helped a little...but not as much. I layed down on the opposite side of the pain and did this for 30 min a day and at night. It finally went away for the most part but boy did it hurt.

  • I used to have severe sciatica.  I had tried everything.  Physical therapy and yoga def work.  I now do yoga 1x per week and do some of the lower back/leg streches every night and I am pain free for a year now. I also love fitflops sandals.  I stand 10hrs a day and they are awesome.  I wear fitflop clogs in the winter to work. Good luck sciatica is horrible.
