Do I really need a $$$ breast pump?

I had supply issues with my DS, so I will definitely be renting one for the first month.  Other than that, I am a SAHM.  We don't get out much either. By the time I get the accessories and the pump, it looks like it could cost me around $400.  I only need to pump for supply and for a very lean stockpile. Any thoughts?  Could I get by with just a hand pump? Thanks for the suggestions!

  • I never used a hand pump, but aren't they really slow?  Personally, I'd be concerned that I'd be less likely to pump for long enough to help my supply.  Why not try both while you have the rental and see what you prefer?

  • I have a Medela manual pump and a PISA. I'm a SAHM for now, but I got a great deal on the PISA so I got it for when I go back to work. I love the manual pump, and I can get just as much as I can with the PISA, but obviously it takes longer since it's one side at a time.

As a SAHM, and only needing to pump for a small supply, I definitely think it's feasible to just use a manual. I would rent for a month, get the manual, and if that's not enough you can get something else.

  • It's up to you since it sounds like you won't need it much. I got an ameda purely yours for 150$ by skipping the fancy bag and extra bottles. The ameda website also has a fifty off coupon right now. I had a medela Pisa with ds1 and prefer my ameda. Hth

The $50 coupon is only for the deluxe version (with the bag, cooler, and bottles).  But I do agree that the ameda is good.  It is the one I use.

  • I have a hand pump for at home. It takes about fifteen minutes for me to get four ounces. For you purpose I think you should be fine with it. And I have heard people say your hand well cramp.. I have never had a problem with that.

I agree.  Plus if you have a LC at the hospital you can ask them for a hand pump to use.  Ours gave us one during our hospital stay and that way it was covered by insurance (it's a Medela and retails for around $35).  They also had me fitted for the proper parts (which I now use with my electric pump).  For your circumstances I would try that first before getting an electric pump.

I'm a SAHM right now and I LOVE my EvenFlo manual pump from Target. I have the Medela PISA too because I thought I was going back to work (and still hope to). The manual is actually faster for me than the electric because the set up and clean up is so quick and easy. My sole complaint about the pump is that EvenFlo does not include spare parts so guard that little blue plastic cap thing carefully!

I'm a SAHM, and I got an electric pump (Ameda Purely Yours) covered by my insurance.  I would call and ask if they do any kind of deal on a breast pump.  I had to purchase through a specific supplier (Ameda was the only brand available) and they covered it 80/20 after my deductible was met.

I have a Medela hand pump from the hospital - for me, it's too much work to consistently pump with.  I want to pump twice a day, just to have a good freezer supply.
