another "you are brave" comment

It was 97 degrees here today so I took the kids to the mall to get out of the house and walk. I must have heard " you are so brave " 7 or 8 times. I wonder if all mothers of more than one child hear this when they leave their house or if this comment is saved for MoMs? Why am I brave? because I leave my house? Such a weird thing to say.

The mall was nice though, I met another MoM with b/g twins just a few weeks older than mine and we got a laugh out of all the weirdos in the mall and the "are they identical" questions. She made me feel normal :)

Three more days of 90+ degrees and then back to walks in our neighborhood thank goodness.

  • I love that!  I was in an elevator at the Mall of America once with a woman who had an infant and a 3 year old who was trying to push every button that exists in an elevator.  She told me I was brave taking both of my 6 month olds out by myself.  This seemed so odd to me.  I just do the same thing twice, while she runs the spectrum of infant to toddler, and some how I've got it bad?!  Save your pity for yourself sister!

  • It's nice to run into other MoM, I feel like we are running into more twin families all the time!

Everywhere we go we get "you have your hands full" comments, the thing that I find really weird is that complete strangers ask to take the girls picture...we never say no because I don't want to be rude, but I think it's so bizarre!

  • I've been taking mine to stores to get out of the house as well.  My favorite moment so far was at an outlet mall the other day when I was trying to change their diapers.  At one point, I had like 5 women gathered around me watching me change diapers all with the "You are brave" and "You have your hands full" comments.  I just replied with "Uh huh" and kept changing diapers.  One woman even offered to watch them so I could go to the bathroom.  I would never leave my kids with a random stranger, but I thought it was sweet of her to offer.

I've had a few people try to do that - some without asking!  I always say no because I don't want strangers having pics of my kids.  I understand it sometimes, like when we had them in matching Hawaiian print outfits at a Jimmy Buffett concert - I'd want to take a pic of that.  But I get random people at the mall, too.

I just smile and say I'd rather you not take a picture and most people are fine with it.

  • The last time I heard "you are so brave" I'm pretty sure I snapped back... oh for God's sake, I'm just raising two kids here, it's not like I'm going to war or something.

  • I get the same thing when I go out with my girls! They're only 3 months old right now so it's easy to go out with them. I figure it'll take some bravery when they're more mobile and able to ask for things at the store. My favorite is when people ask me if they are identical or "paternal".
