driving after delivery

Has anyone been told that they could not drive for 6 weeks post partum with a vaginal delivery?

A friend's sister said she's not supposed to drive until her 6 week check up and I can not figure out why a dr would say that - especially for a vaginal delivery.  Just curious if it's the norm

Re: driving after delivery

  • one paper that was in all my paperwork from discharge with general in said no drivign for  two weeks. i was never actually instructed not to drive, could not see why i should not so i was driving less than a week after. i can understand with a cs but i do not with an uncomplicated vaginal delivery.

  • I wasn't told not to drive. I took LO to his 1 week checkup on my own.
  • I drove myself and the baby home when I was discharged from the hospital. Both DH and I had our cars there.
  • They told me not to drive for 2 weeks. I did drive the week after to the supermarket and I totally felt like I was going to pass out while I was walking around.
  • I was told 7 days with my first, and this time the midwife said only not to drive if I was taking pain medication.

I think because of the pain medication is why they recommend not driving.

  • The only person to tell me not to drive after delivery was my mom.  I told her that since I didn't have a cs and since no one said anything, I would kindly decline her advice.

I did have DH take me places when I could but for the most part I was driving a week pp.

  • I had a vaginal delivery with DD (#1) and I don't remember having any driving restrictions.  I do distinctly remember my first solo trip to the grocery store about 1 week PP, and I felt like it was such a treat to be out alone!  lol!  I had a c-section with DS (#2), so that's a whole different story - just started driving again 2 weeks ago.

  • I was told no driving for 2 weeks because I could reopen my stitches getting in/out of the car or I could start bleeding very heavily or cramping badly while driving and end up in an accident. May seem a little over the top but 2 weeks went by fast. Six weeks seems completely unnecessary.

  • I had a vaginal delivery and I was told 2 weeks.  I had a pretty bad tear, and was pretty sore so just sitting down and getting up was a challenge... driving would have been tough. I could have done it the second week but I had plenty of help so I didn't need to :)

  • Yikes, that seems like overkill. I had a c/s and was told not to drive for 3-4 weeks. I felt capable of driving before I was two weeks pp, but I held out until I was 3 weeks out. Unless she had a very traumatic delivery, I'd double-check on that with her ob if I were her.

  • No...with DS they said no driving for 2 weeks.  This time I don't think it said anything in my discharge paperwork, not sure.  I did drive DD to her 2 day check at the pedi though and have made several other quick runs out to the store, DS's preschool, etc.  I feel totally fine and capable of driving.

  • I was told no driving for 2 weeks after my vaginal delivery. 6 weeks seems really excessive.

  • i had a section, as was allowed to drive as soon as my staples were out (1 week).  i was only told not to drive if i was still taking the percocet.

  • I was told 2 weeks for my vaginal delivery. I asked my doctor why and she said it was to do with my equilibrium and hormones being all messed up since I wasn't pregnant anymore. She said that my reactions could be slow.

  • I was never told not to drive after my vaginal delivery. But I chose not to for at least 2 weeks. Mostly due to the stiches down there. I just wasnt comfortable doing it. Heck, sitting hurt!
