Success after IF

Would you let you 10 month old eat from a buffet restaurant?

We ate at a popular chinese buffet style restaurant and i wanted to give Asha tastes of the food (cold and hot) but thought better of it because i had visions of typhoid Mary in my head....who knows who has touched what? Am i being paranoid given that everything else goes in her mouth?

  • You were eating the food, right? Why can't she?

If you think about it, germs are everywhere.  You can't protect against everything out there, and in the end, she has an immune system that will likely fight off most of what is out there-- especially if you've been nursing.

I see no reason why she couldn't try the food at a buffet!

  • Yep.

She is mobile now, right?  In that case, she's crawling around on the nasty floor, and has ingested more germs than you'll ever know about.  That's what builds healthy immune systems.

If the food is okay for you to eat, its perfectly fine for her to eat it.

  • I would be more concerned about avoiding the dishes with peanuts in them than the food itself. Chinese has crazy salt too so while I'm not against salt at all, I might limit what I give them to more steamed veggies, rice and a few bites of a sauced dish (likely to have tons of salt).

This pretty much. I would have no problem with it germ wise, but I wouldn't give her a lot due to the salt (we introduced PB at 10 months).
Brought to you by IVF, ICSI, limited fert, and oocyte cryopreservation.
    Because we're fancy like that.

My pedi says no PB until 2 years old. :( I know that's crazy late but we have a close relative with a severe allergy so we can't risk it incase they have a bad reaction.

Aw man, that stinks! With no history of food allergies with our families, we got the green light at 9 months.

Ditto both ladies! Per our allergist now that E has been diagnosed with a peanut allergy, we are supposed to stay completely away from chinese restaurants because they are notorious for using peanuts in dishes you would never even think of and having cross contamination problems. She has been a few times and we get her steamed rice and steamed broccoli, but she has been eating off of buffets/salad bars since she started table foods.

  • I love buffets - no trying to entertain a baby while you are waiting for your food to be served.

We took the boys to a buffet a few weeks back.  I think they are now rethinking their policy of not charging for babies!  Harry had a TON of fish!

  • I see no reason not to. I went to lunch with a friend at a chineese buffet last week and Hayden loved it. We eat at Old Country Buffet quite a bit as well. Germs are ok, they are needed to be healthy in the long run.

  • I would just avoid anything with honey in it (not sure if they use it in some of the sauces), but otherwise, I'm sure it's fine.

  • I used to take my kids to the buffet around here.  Chris used to eat his weight in crab legs!  The waitresses used to all pile around us to gawk at him mowing down on crab :)
