I'm taking DD1 to get her helmet today. I am very nervous about the whole process and don't really know what to expect. The cost is rediculous and the fact that our insurance considers it cosmetic blows my mind! She came out severe on the scane they did, so she will be wearing it for a few months. She has been STTN since 2 months, and I have a feeling that is going out the window! Please send of T&P for her and me if you get a chance!

Re: Getting DDs helmet today!
Good luck! You and she will do great! It really is not nearly as bad as you anticipate. Our DS was in a helmet for 11 weeks, and we had no issues. He was also STTN and it didn't impact his sleep one bit - not even the first night. They are so resilient at this age!
A couple tips we got (we went through Hanger orthotics)....you don't have to clean the inside with soap and water every night - 2-3x a week is fine. On the other nights, just spray the inside with some diluted rubbing alcohol and wipe dry with a cloth. I used a little spray bottle I got in the travel section at Target, filled it 3/4 full w/ alcohol and 1/4 water, and misted the inside lightly. Also, once it's dry, if you sprinkle a tiny bit of baby powder on the inside and rub it around, that helps absorb some of the moisture from sweating.
We got decals from blingyourband.com - super cute!
The whole insurance thing is just sickening. We have United Health Care and our policy had a specific exclusion for helmets. Amazingly, though....after the first denial, Hanger filed an appeal for us, and they approved it. We couldn't believe it. So, even if you think it won't be covered, give it a shot...you never know.
Sending you and DD lots of good thoughts!
GL!
Ditto the blingyourband decals, I loved decorating DS's helmets (he wore 2 of them over 4 months)!
Also ditto the cleaning if you're getting a DOC band but they'll give you all the info you need about that.
DS's sleep was not affected by the helmet. The biggest thing you'll probably have to deal w/ since it is summer is the sweating. But she'll get used to it after a week or so, don't worry! Those little ones are so adaptable!!!!
