Middle name for Charlotte

Charlotte isn't up for debate. We find out on Friday what the sex is (holy crap).

If it's a boy we're using DH's first name as the middle to honor his Pop Pop. If it's a girl I want to do the same for my Poppy and I feel guilty not doing so.

Because his name started with an M Melanie would do just that. We both LOVE Melanie and almost picked it as a first name. But... DH and I still like Claire a lot more with Charlotte.

Not that this is a make it or break it but my rabbi brother didn't name his oldest after anyone and he said it isn't a big deal.

So, my question is, use Melanie (every M name has been suggested and we don't like anything but Melanie and Madison OR it's already in the family) for my Poppy or use Claire because it's our favorite?

I asked my Dad if there was a chance Claire would actually honor anyone in the family. Just as a quick note---honoring in my family does not mean using the person's full name---never has.

  • Would you consider two middle or two first names?  Charlotte Claire Melanie ____?

I know it's not popular on this board but it solves the problem of using Melanie and getting to use both of your favorite names.

  • Not to be rude, but you seem to be turning down everyone's options. (Either use Claire because it sounds good or pick another M name that sounds better than Melanie.) And they're really the only ones you've got. I'm not quite sure why you're posting on here!

Good luck with everything! And don't get too worried about your girl's name until you find out for sure if you're having a girl or a boy

I'm gonna put in a vote for Charlotte Melanie.

Claire is a beautiful name, but it's also the fairly generic middle name of a ton of girls.

My middle name is Chai (after my grandfather) and I love having a middle name with family meaning. It's so much better than something pretty but empty, IMO.

Ultimately, either way is lovely -- good luck!

i'm not downing opinions, i'm downing name suggestions. i did say in my post that every M name has been suggested and we don't like them, so i really don't think i'm doing anything wrong. it's pretty obvious why i posted: it says "go with melanie or go with claire?" sorry if it wasn't clear but i thought it was...

  • I am a huge fan of having a mn with meaning.  For that reason I would say go with Charlotte Melanie even though it doesn't flow/sound as good as Charlotte Claire.

Good luck finding out the sex!  I hope the baby cooperates!

  • I'd go with Claire. In my opinion, a name that starts with the same letter doesn't really honor anyone. Seems phony. If I told my mom (Karen) that I named my son Kaden in honor of her, she'd probably be pretty confused and think I was full of crap.

I get if it is a full name or nickname for the persons actual name. I'd consider Lucy if my mom was Luciana or something like that, but otherwise it's just not really an honor IMO.

PS: Charlotte is our top girl name as well and we are using Charlotte Karen to honor my mom. Or Charlotte Kate (which is my sisters name).

  • I would use Melanie. I think it's nice to honor family with the middle name. I'm not a fan of pulling middle names out of the air. Maybe save Claire for a first name if you have another daughter some day.
