Well, the birthday party was a success! It didn't rain, but it was very hot and humid. Charlie had a great time and enjoyed seeing friends and family. Everything was going great until...
We gave him a birthday cupcake. This was the first time he had eaten anything like this before. Of course, he smashed it all over the place and we laughed and took pictures until we realized something wasn't right. He started crying and scratching his face. I wiped him down and took him out of his highchair and realized that he was getting really red. We thought he might be getting a little bit of heat rash, so we stripped him down and dabbed him with a cool rag. He was hysterical and then he was breaking out in HIVES! They were all over his face and he had a few on his body. We walked him around in his stroller for a few minutes to calm him down, and the hives went away on their own. My poor little guy- I felt so bad for him!! I thought we were going to end up the ER. He seems fine now and is acting like his normal self.
So, now the big question is: why did this happen? The frosting on the cupcakes was made with egg whites. He has never had eggs before, so could this mean he is allergic to eggs or maybe something else in the cupcakes? He has a well baby visit coming up so we'll see what the Pedi has to say...
Re: Birthday Hives!!
Until you go to your Pedi, I would suggest keeping some benedryl on hand. My DD is allergic to honey, but it took MONTHS before we were able to figure out that it was honey (you would be surprised what honey is in).
Every time we would THINK we had the allergen down, she would have another bout of facial hives. The benedryl in the premade "spoons" were a godsend.
While I am thankful its only honey, on the food end, we now hae to worry about bees....so I live with our epi-pen.
Plus, there is nwo a Food Allergy board on The Bump. They are wonderful resources.

Aw, poor guy, but Happy Birthday Charlie! It could be the eggs, definately talk to your pedi. And second that to the Benadryl. We had to do that with T for a while with a yet unknown (and outgrown reaction) reaction, raspberries (outgrown) and Ibuprofen/Advil (not outgrown). Benadryl lives in my cupboard as a precaution with the girls.
Egg whites are the more allergenic part of eggs so maybe. I would make a list of all the foods he ate. Fresh tomatos will sometimes give Ellie a bit of reddness where they touch her face, and apparently that's very normal. GL
Glad the rest of the day turned out well!
