hypnobabies for a homebirth?

Hi Ladies,

I was wondering if anyone used hypnobabies for a home birth. I am almost 27 weeks and just started my hypnobabies home course. I am planning a home birth and sometimes feel that the whole program is just really geared to a hospital setting.  I was wondering how helpful it is at home and if anyone had success with it.  Thanks :)

Re: hypnobabies for a homebirth?

  • I didn't, but my SIL did.  She is still waiting for her LO to arrive, but I think it will be a good too for her.  She can be a bit high strung at times (she said so herself!) so it helps calm her down and focus.

I personally figured between being at home, having the birth tub, and my knowledgeable MW on hand, I wouldn't need anything else- and I was right in my case.

  • I'm doing Hypnobabies for a birth center birth, and I agree that there is a lot that's more geared toward hospital birth and avoiding interventions, which doesn't apply to me since those won't be offered or available. But I still think it's worth it, the cues to relax and get through/enjoy the birthing waves will be helpful no matter where you're delivering. The midwives I'm delivering with don't particularly recommend one method over another, but they have said that they've been really impressed with how calm most of the hypno-moms they've worked with have been.

If you join the Hypnobabies Yahoo users group (https://groups.yahoo.com/group/Hypnobabies/), there is a big folder of homebirth birth stories.

  • I used it for my homebirth. Granted, I planned a hospital birth for most of my pregnancy (switched at 36 weeks). But I felt that the core tools/techniques were perfectly applicable in a home setting.

True, you probably don't need to put your "Hypnobabies birth in progress" sign on your bedroom door Wink And it might be less important to know the downsides to getting an epidural when you're birthing in a place where an epidural isn't an option -- but I think it's still good to know that just to remind yourself of why you're giving birth in a place where an epidural isn't an option. As for the different stages of labor, different positions to labor in, and of course, the self-hypnosis scripts... those are the same regardless of where you're birthing.

  • Lurker here-- I did hypnobirthing and even though I did deliver in a hospital, you could easily use the relaxation techniques at home.

I think HypnoBabies really helped me last time....I ended up having DD 5 minutes after getting to the hospital. This time we are planning a home water birth and I am still retaking the home course. It really helped me to accept the surges and make it to the very end with A LOT less discomfort than I ever expected.
  • I used hypnobabies to prepare for my home birth and here are a few random thoughts:

    - I found myself noticing the hospital references in the written materials. That said, the actual tracks don't have any bias toward the hospital, so I would just shift your focus to them.

    - You can plan the birth you want, but that doesn't guarantee you anything. For me, being prepared with a sense of what happens in the hospital felt like a good investment. (And when I did end up in the hospital, it was a big help).

    - Not all home birth MWs are supportive or educated about hypnobirthing. My midwife wasn't as supportive as I might have liked (e.g., she'd say things like, 'I know I'm not supposed to talk about pain, but...'). If your MW doesn't have experience with it (or worse, has a negative experience), you may find you'll need some of the tools to enforce your plan. Perhaps some of the intervention avoidance material could help with this.

Agreed with all of these!  I really liked knowing the  possible interventions, etc just in case something did happen and I ended up at a hospital having all of these things thrown at me.  Knowledge is power, after all!

  • The course does cover a lot about what happens at hospitals simply because most women in this country do give births at hospitals and even those not planning on birthing at a hospital should know what usually goes on in hospitals just in case they find themselves in one -- it's really not a "bias" toward hospitals, just meeting most women where they are at. But, the course is awesome for homebirthers, too. Just file all the hospital info in your brain under  "good to know, hope I'll never need this info" spot.

Also, I know homebithers who have used the door signs around their house just to remind everyone to be calm during the birth and to remind mom to use her hypnosis.

To your question about whether it can be used by homebirthers -- absolutely! Tons of homebirthing moms have had success with it. You should check out the birth stories blogs on the Hypnobabies website -- lots of homebirth stories!
