If you've cut out dairy...

just curious if when you were told to cut out dairy, if you went all out at the beginning, or if you started with just the main stuff - milk, cheese, yogurt.

I read online that milk is in pretty much everything, and I really dont want to have to go shopping for 'milk free' food when it may not be what's causing it.

Also, what did you substitute your regular milk with? Soy? Almond? Rice?

  • YES, cut everything out,and it tried almond milk and i developed an allergy to that itchy hands and feet so now im trying coconut milk and it's delicous. DD rash is clearing up but not the gassy and fussiness either.good luck.

  • I'm on day 4 of being dairy free. At first I just started out with the big stuff- milk, cheeses, yogurts etc. and noticed a big difference with LO. My plan is to go all dairy free for a while and see how LO does. Hopefully I can get away with just avoiding the big stuff. I don't know what I am going to replace regular milk with. Good luck!

  • I'm just milk free. Cheese and yogurt don't bother her. I drink almond milk, and love it!
  • I've only cut out the main dairy.  And not even cheese, just large amounts of cheese.  My guy had green poop and gassiness, he also has baby acne (not sure if that is related or not) but the green poop went away, he still gets some gas, but burping and bicycle legs help work it out and then he's fine.

So I don't know if the green poop was related to dairy or not.  It could have also been from a hindmilk/foremilk imbalance which I've also corrected.

    Good luck!

Oh and I drink vanilla almond milk.  It's good.  =)

  • I'm a weird case since I am producing so little (but still giving it the good ol' college try!). So he's also on formula and we're working our way through formula after formula trying to find one that works. He doesn't arch and flail while BF'ing anymore though. I cut out all dairy including "hidden" sources. I drink almond milk. I still have to add chocolate syrup to it though to drink it by itself, but it's great in cereal by itself.

I cut out all dairy including hidden dairy - it wasn't too hard really and better for my diet as I have to skip many processed foods.  I've been using mostly rice milk and coconut milk since many dairy sensitive babies are also soy sensitive.  I'll try more soy in a few weeks (I've not been avoiding hidden soy, just obvious soy).

I'd also put in a plug for chocolate coconut milk ice cream - yum!

ETA:  After about two weeks dairy free, the green mucousy poop was gone and her bad rashy skin had completely cleared up - worth the lack of cheese!

  • Well I am lactose intolerant so I haven't had dairy products in years.  Then when I got pregnant I gave lactose free milk a chance and tolerated it without anyh problems except a little nausea in the beggining.  I used to drink soy milk but I heard that soy isn't so good for the growing fetus so I stopped that.  You need to do what is best for you so you feel better for your baby.

  • I have only cut out the main things: milk, cheese, ice cream, etc.  I haven't messed with baked goods and processed food.  We've been doing this for 2 weeks now, and I have the happiest baby!  No more tears, and hardly any gas at all.

I have rice milk and coconut milk.  I used the rice milk for cereal, but the coconut for drinking.

I agree with ncbelle, babies allergic to dairy are often also allergic to soy, so I'm avoiding dairy; and I've lost a few pounds since I started this because I really don't need that.
