Babies born at 37 weeks are twice as likely to die in the first year of life than babies born at 40 weeks. I'm not sure if this is true for all babies or just those electively delivered early--I think it's for all births. But that's a pretty compelling reason why elective inductions or cesareans shouldn't be done until 39-40 weeks.
Re: Another strike against early elective deliveries
At most hospitals now, it is standard of care to require an amnio when an induction or c/s is done prior to 39 weeks for non-medical reasons.
I completely agree. Just because 37 weeks is considered full term doesn't mean that every baby is ready to be born then.
