Pregnant after a Loss

I really hope this little one is just a peanut like mommy.

I went in this morning for one of my biweekly NSTs and AFIs. I am having these tests biweekly per request of my OB because of semi-low fluid levels at my BPP two weeks ago. Anyways, NST was good today, never have had any concerns there, and my AFI was still 11 like it was the last time. But when I left, one of the nurses said "you were right, he is measuring small" (I had told her this because she had asked about any issues with this pregnancy). I had the test done at the hospital today because my OB's office was closed for the holiday and I still had to get it done. My OB has never acted particularly concerned about his size (35th percentile at the growth u/s), but it makes me nervous when people comment on him beings small. I am fine with having a little baby, especially because I am very petite, but it still makes me anxious when medical professionals comment about him being small. It makes me think they aren't telling me something, even though my OB claims he will probably be around 6-7lbs full term, which is totally normal.

My friend the other day asked if I enjoyed being pregnant. I wish I could say that I did, because I have had a pretty easy pregnancy until recently with the fluid and growth concerns, but pregnancy is just so stressful. I am so blessed to be 34 weeks pregnant right now, and I am so thankful Luca is still doing well, but I will be soooooooooooooo relieved when he is on the outside! I don't know how I am going to get through the next 6 weeks just sitting around and waiting now that school is out for the summer. I am glad to have the time to relax, but I am just so anxious for him to get here safely.

I hope the time flies, and that Luca stays in there till he's cooked. I really think the nurses/drs would tell you if his being onthe smaller side was cause for concern, it sounds like this one today mentioned it very casually which they wouldn't do if anything was off (or unless they were super unproffessional). With you being petite, I think the baby would need to stay a little smaller to fit.

  • (((Hugs))) I agree that the nurses and doctors would tell you if they were concerned over his size.  My DH was a little baby - around 6 pounds (I think he was under it) - and full term.  His mom is only 4'11" and that's all she could fit.  He's now over 6'.  Both of her sons are tall and both of them were small at birth.  Just remember that they're basing the average baby on a 7.5 pound baby, which would be a really big baby on your frame.

Just remember that out of 100 babies, there are 34 smaller than him.  And it is not like you want a huge baby either.  I am sure the dr would let you know if there were reasons to be concerned.  I am sure he will be great.

  • Hang in there.

Rambo measured at the 62nd percentile at his growth scan, and the Dr. didn't say he was BIG, he said he was in the average range; just a bit above the 50% mark. So, by that logic, Luca is is the average range too; just a bit below the 50% mark.

I'm sure he is just fine! If your Dr. has not expressed concern, I'm not concerned either.

  • As a PP said -- 35th percentile is average. Really! To get all math nerd on you, numbers within a half a standard deviation of the mean are generally considered solidly in the "average" range To translate this into percentiles, this means any score between 31-69 percentile is considered solidly average. I'd say Luca's size is just fine :) --and for some tests, we expand average even broader, up to 1 standard deviation in either direction.

And to further reassure you, just in case he does end up on the smaller side, friend of mine who is fairly petite (5'3") had a 5.5lb baby at full term last july and he is doing GREAT and has met all milestones right on target.

  • Aw hun I understand. Try not to worry too much either. My DD was tiny (6 lbs 12 oz) at birth and now she is HUGE, off the charts in height. She is as big as some 5 year olds. And she is as smart as some too, hehe. Some babies are just smaller :)

  • Somebody's got to be 35th %ile, I bet he's just petite and petite on the inside does not necessarily mean he'll be petite on the outside. Keep cooking Lucas, but don't make your mommy wait too long for your arrival! ((HUGS))

  • Hugs. I?m sorry you?ve been so stressed lately. Like others have said, I think if the doctors were truly concerned, they would have mentioned it by now. I wouldn?t worry about it, but I understand why you are :-) Hope the next six weeks fly by so that you can hold your normal, healthy little man in your arms!
