Cloth Diapering

No CDs from baby shower!

Hello! I just had my baby shower yesterday and the only CDR item I received were 3 fleece liners. Haha! So, what would you do for your stash if you are on a budget? I am returning a few items from the shower so I will have a little bit of money, but there is still other non-CDR items needed as well! It's amazing someone so tiny needs this much stuff! Thanks!

Re: No CDs from baby shower!

  • I'm always shocked when I hear someone who DOES get cds as a gift because unless you are a CDer yourself, they aren't really a fun gift to give.  WE think its a great gift but people who don't CD are all "OMG $25 for ONE diaper... I'd feel so cheap if I only brought TWO diapers as a gift!" They are kind of right- for the same price you could get a bouncer or something and FEEL like you got something more useful... anyway...

I'd recommend NOT scrimping here- buy QUALITY cloth diapers so that you will be sure to use them.  I really like BumGenius and Fuzzibunz for pocket diapers.  I really like Sustainable Babyish snapless fitteds for fitteds and especially as my overnight diapers.  You baby will not fit into any of these one size diapers right away- usually not until 10 lbs so I would recommend getting prefolds and covers until then- we used Little  Lions and they were cheap and easy.

  • Thank you so much!

Yea, I can see that buying some cute onesies or socks would appeal to more people! Most of my family uses disposables(or did when they had kids in diapers of course)so I am sure they were confused why I had CDs on my registry.

I will look into all of those kinds for sure! And I did get a ton of disposables as gifts(and hopefully can return some!) if I am in a pinch in the beginning.

  • I was surprised when someone bought me a reusable wipes warmer/reusable wipes.....but she CD so it totally made sense. Lots of other people got me sposies and one person got me a diaper genie(even though I had a registry card that showed I was CD'ing lol). Someone else gave me 12 kushies which I am going to use since they were out of the packaging and I couldn't return them.

I would also recommend not scrimping on CD's.....like don't go and get kushies at walmart just because they are cheap....they are that cheap for a reason if you kwim.

So far I have spent less than $600 on supplies and have gotten the following

    12 Bummis Prefolds (Infant size)
5 Bummis Super Brites Covers (Small)
Package of Rock in Green detergent
    Bummis sposie Liners
    5 reusable fleexe liner
    5 Hemp doublers
    3 Snappis
    1 Bottle Gaia Baby Powder
    1 container of Bum-Bum Balm
12 BumGenius 4.0 SnapOne size Pocket diapers
    6 Fuzzibuns One Size pockets
    18 inserts
    1 Medium wet/dry bag
    1 Medium Bummis wet bag

    What was gifted:
1 Wipes Warmer (+4 rayon wipes)
    24 Bummas Wipes
    1 Small wetbag
    12 Kushies Flat diapers

I bought my BG and FB on www.nellsnaturalbaby.com and got all 18 diapers for ~$285 (got 4 artists series BG's) as they are buy 5 get one free so it works out to be at $15 per diaper, and she throws in extra liners if you use a coupon code for free liners.

  • I got money from grandparents who wrote in the card that it is for cloth diapers, but that is the closest thing I got.

I went with prefolds and covers.  It is the cheapest option.  Check out my blog, there is a start up stash post that shows my under $100 start.

You can also find some great deals on pre-owned diapers, especially for the newborn stage.  Like a pp said, prefolds and covers are also a great way to go if you are on a budget.

  • I bought my newborn stash off a friend, then built up the current stash as we went. I also had fantastic grandparents who helped us out once it was clear we were going to keep CDing.

Nobody gave us cloth diapers at our shower -- in fact we were given some disposables!

  • Yea, I started researching CDing after the baby shower invites were already sent. And we had a diaper raffle at my shower, so we got a TON of disposables. Some people gave gift receipts, but not many. I am hoping maybe some stores will give me at least a gift card for them?

Oh! One more question! Do you have any favorite brand of prefolds and also covers? There are a lot of cute ones...

I'm new to CL diapering but we love green mountain diaper prefolds and thirsties duo covers. Not a single blow out or leak in 4 weeks and they really fit my son well. He was born nearly 9lbs and is now nearly 11lbs and we're still using the orange newborn. We just switched from an angel fold to a trifold.  We also bought all our newborn stash second hand from Craigslist.

    ETA: weeks, not months.

I would hold off on buying too much, since you don't know what's going to work for your baby.  I bought a bunch of pre-folds and extra-small covers, but DS was huge and never fit into them.  We started at 8 or 9 weeks with pocket diapers.  I thought I was going to love BG 4.0 snaps, so I loaded up on those, but it turns out I prefer velcro for my squirmy baby.  I also bought a bunch of Charlie Bananas on Zulily and a couple Fuzzibunz, but neither fit DS well.  I'm going to sell them.

I know most people use a regular trash barrel with a pail liner, but I prefer Planetwise wet bags.  We have 2, so one is always clean.

Hey :) do you have boyish/gn Charlie bananas? OS or sized? I'd be interested if the price is right :)

Thank you! I am definitely looking into buying used(there are a few rummage sales coming up next weekend that advertise a lot of different kind of CDs) and also using prefolds and covers at least for the newborn phase!

Awesome input everyone. I am really excited to start CDing...and to be a mom too of course! Is it July yet?

  • I got some good newborn stuff from the gently used section of jillians drawers. They looked practically new, just prepped. I got kl0s, thirsties duo dipes, snappis, and some covers. I took advantage of a couple big sales (keep an eye on diaperpin.com for those) to get my accessories and prefolds.

  • many recommend doing a diaper trial like the one from Jillian's Diapers to try lots of different kinds and discover what fits your baby first.  You could do prefolds and covers for the newborn stage and then do a trial and then stock up from there.  Lots of good used diapers on diaperswappers.com and spots corner on hyenacart.com.

  • For a newborn, you don't need a lot to start CDing and can do so easily on a budget.

    2 dozen infant prefolds ... approx. $36

    5 covers ... approx.  $63.75

That's less than $100.  Add in 2 dozen regular prefolds (approx. $40) and you're set to CD for around 6+ months (until LO is 18-20 pounds) for about a cost of $140.

  • I would get green mountain diaper PFs & Thirsties covers.  Or if you don't want to go that route do the Jillian's Drawers trial & take it from there once you know what works for you.

  • All the other pps had great ideas so I jsut wanted to add that if you're returning stuff to BRU, they usually just give you store credit I think. They sell Bum Genius 4.0 pockets on their website. They are 2 for $35 which is more than you would spend if you bought them used, but helpful if you have store credit to use up and no CDs. That's what I did. They also have the Flip system online too. GL!

  • Try returning the diapers to walmart. They take almost anything back without a receipt. They'll give you a gift card, but you can use it for other baby items to free up the money for diapers.
