Post partum BG testing? (annoyed)

So I had my baby on Monday.  They checked my fasting BG when I arrived for my c/s, but then "forgot" to check it again until the day after delivery, so they didn't get a fasting BG before I left.  I didn't ask, because I was diet controlled GD and figured they didn't need to check me anymore.  My post-meal #'s were fine on a regular diet.  Since I left the hospital a day early, my MFM specialist asked me to check my BG for 1 more day so we could get a good fasting #.  I was ok with this and called in my #'s yesterday afternoon (all within range).

So today, I get a call from the nurse, who wants me to test for the whole holiday weekend!  When I asked why, she said because they want more data.  I don't understand why.  I think they screwed up and thought my fasting was 100 (which is still within range for regular diabetes), but that was my post dinner number.  My fasting was actually 74.  When I pressed, she quickly changed to "well maybe just check for one more day and then just e-mail us your #'s".  I can't tell if they just screwed up my #'s or if the MD is really just a jerk.

Side story, he also told me that only 10% of his GD pt's can be controlled with diet alone- I was controlled with a not very strict diet...  SO overall I'm really annoyed that they want me to keep checking my #'s when they have all been fine, even by GD standards.  Anyone else have a similar experience?  I just really get the feeling that they don't know what they are doing over there and I'm just being tortured needlessly.

 Sorry, I needed to vent.

Re: Post partum BG testing? (annoyed)

  • I had to check my fasting #s for two weeks after delivery, so I'm having a little trouble mustering up sympathy. Honestly, by that point I had gotten used to it, kwim?

I also still check my fasting and post-meal numbers occasionally.

  • yeah... they told me I had to go back for my post-pardum numbers... I never did.

What were they going to do, drag me back?

  • I don't know if this is another "every doctor is different" situation or if something in your particular history indicates that this is the best course of action.  Last time, at my 39 week visit, my MFM dictated the orders he was sending the hospital for me.  He stated that I had been diet controlled and that they were to check my blood sugar during labor every few hours.  They were to call him if I was either high or low.  They were not to test me after delivery and I was not to be put on a diabetic diet while in the hospital.  He told me that I would not have to test anymore after that.  I would need to go to a lab to have a 2 hour GTT drawn at 6 weeks pp.  Are you not having to do the 2 hour test at 6 weeks?
