My 8th graders opinions on girl names

So, yesterday most of the 8th grade was at Great Adventure Amusement Park. The 15 left behind were kids that were not allowed to go because of suspensions, drugs, weapons, and such.

A few of the left-behind girls asked me what names we are thinking of. I said that if the baby is a boy we are naming him Patrick. I said that we had not yet started whittling down girl names. They were horrified that we do not have a girl name pickled out yyet.

So, this morning, in my mailbox, I find this:

Miss M-

You should name ur baby one of these

Unique

Destiney

Geneses

Nevaeh (spell it backwards, it's kewl)

Sara

(a drawn heart)

Brytny and Leidy

How cute is that? I mean, once you get beyond their butchered ELA skills (thank heavens I am not their ELA teacher). But, how did Sarah get in that list?

Omigoodness. How cute!!! With the exception of Sara, these are pretty awful. But the thought behind them makes them downright precious. So so cute.

Distiney is totes my fave.  What's ELA?

Haha! Reason 974 teenagers (generally speaking) should not be having babies: they name them things like "Unique" and "Leidy."

Though, to be fair, my mom had me as a teenager and I got a normal name, though at one point she was toying with "Destiny."

I have to say, if Geneses was spelled correctly, I think that's kind of cool. Real World Boston, anyone? I like it.

Instead of saying English, it is now ELA: English Language Arts. Sometime between graduating high school in 1995 and starting my job in 2006, the name changed.

Totally! I wouldn't choose it for my kid, but I like the name.
