Click Poll re grilling/cooking out/barbeque

I've always called it barbequing as in We are going to bbq this weekend. When we BBQ it can be any sort of meat, fajitas, ribs, chicken, steak. I'm from south Texas and that is what everyone called it. What do you call it?

Re: Click Poll re grilling/cooking out/barbeque

  • For us, it depends on the device used to cook the meat.  If it's a charcoal pit, we call it barbecue[ing].  If it's a gas grill, we call it grilling.

  • Barbecue to me is smoking. If we had a smoker we could barbecue. But we just have a grill so we grill. When I was a kid in the midwest we called it "cooking out" or going to a "cook out".

If it's a noun, as in a party, I say I'm going to a BBQ. If it's a verb, as in what I'm about to do to a steak/burger/chicken/brat, I say I am grilling.

  • I Grill. When I lived in New England, we barbequed. My friends who live in D.C. like to Grill Out (special snowflake).
  • Ditto everyone :)

Noun - going to a party, its a BBQ

Verb - cooking meat on a grill - Grilling

Verb - cooking meat in a smoker - We say we're going to smoke a brisket, smoke some ribs....

  • Up here they say "grilling out."  I say BBQing.  Yeah, everyone knows I'm not from around here every time I open my mouth.  ;)

  • I've always had charcoal pits so maybe that has something to do with it? It sounds funny to say you're gonna grill on a BBQ pit but not so funny because it's a gas grill.
