Babies: 0 - 3 Months

What would you do...

So here's my situation. My brother was killed this past February and the person who murdered him was just found guilty. I went to the trial (and was very glad that I did). I am currently living in a different state and had to go back home for ~ 2 weeks to attend. Unfortunately, they didn't yet sentence him, and I want to go back home for that. My dilemma is that I have a new job - I'm talking not even 1 month of actually working. While my colleagues have been VERY supportive (they even sent flowers to my parents!), I just don't want to seem like I'm taking advantage or anything. I really want to be there during the sentencing b/c I want to say something to this guy. I don't really know what I'm going to say yet. I think it could give me some more closure. It's just a tough situation...

TIA

Re: What would you do...

  • If they are willing to work with you and have been supportive this far, I would try to go. And say what is on your heart
  • First I want to say that I am so sorry about your brother, I can't imagine how hard that is.  If you think it would help give you closure to be at the sentencing then you should try to go.  Explain to your boss what the situation is and I think you'll be fine.  I certainly wouldn't feel like you were taking advantage of the situation if I were a coworker.

  • i would just tell them that you are very appreciative of their support and flexibility and that it won't hurt your feelings if it isn't feasible but that it is very important to you to go and see him sentenced.  it gives them an out if they need it, but it sounds like they will def be ok with it.
  • If they've been so understanding so far, I would think that they would understand that you'd like to go back.

Even if they didn't understand, I'd still go - you could always find another job if you had to, but you'll never have another chance to get the closure that you need from a tragedy like this.

I'm so sorry that you have to go through this at all and I hope it all works out.
