Stuttering toddler - normal?

Yesterday and today, DH and I have noticed that Brady has been stuttering or stammering or something. He sounds like he is excited and says "eh na, eh na, eh na Mickey!". We've never heard him do this before. Has anyone else ever had a toddler do this? Is it normal because he is just getting excited and trying to figure out what word to use or something to be concerned about? I'm going to ask his teachers tomorrow to see if they have noticed it.

  • jax does this when he's excited.  i think it's normal.  i figure he can't talk as fast as his little brain is going so he gets tongue tied. :)

  • It's considered pretty normal and is most likely just a part of his speech development. Usually, I think it's because of getting excited like you said and his thoughts are sort of working faster than he can put into words. From what I remember, it can last anywhere from3-6 months off and on and isn't really anything to worry about unless you see it getting way worse or lasting for much longer than 6 months

  • Ds does something similar by repeating words. You could ask him a question and he'd say, "Because....because....because....the dog is hungry". It's like he's buying himself time at the beginning to complete his thoughts on what he's about to say. He never does this in the middle of a sentence, only at the beginning. We had him speech evaluated through the school system last month and she said it's a normal phase.

  • Totally normal.  Ridge went through it pretty bad for abut 6-7 months around Brady's age and now it is gone.  He was talking about 1 to 2-years ahead of his age group so his little mind was working faster than his mouth.

Completely normal!  Connor started stuttering around 29 months and he still studders from time to time and he is 36 months.  He was a very early talkers even before he started studdering and his little brain is just moves faster.  Our pedi and SIL who is a pedi to not be concerned unless he is still studdering going into his 4s.  Therefore we are hoping it clears up by then or we will have to do speech therapy.

  • Thanks ladies! Good to know it's pretty common. I looked online and found what you're telling me, too, that usually there is no reason for concern until they get closer to 4. Thanks again!

  • H does this every now and then, but it's only the very first word of sentences.  It's like her mouth can't keep up with her brain. I mentioned it to pedi and they said it was normal - just to keep an eye on it to see if frequency increases.
