Helmet Mommas a ?

How many mm off was your LO?  I took both girls today and we fall into the grey area where it is up to us to decide what to do.  Arianna is 8mm off and Kayleigh is 6mm off.  I am going to try repositioning and we go back in a month for another measurement.  I was just wondering what made you decide to go with (or without) the helmet.

Thanks!

  • Our tort boy was off 20mm.

  • Our DS was 12mm.  We got down to a 2 with 11 wks of the helmet.  I believe Hanger Orthotics & Cranial Tech told us the cutoff was 6mm for putting them in a helmet.  How old are your LO's?  Have you tried repositioning yet?  Our DS had pretty bad torticollis from birth and repositioning did nothing.  I wouldn't wait much past 7 mos if you're going to do a helmet.  The earlier you get them in, the less time they spend in it.  Do you know if you'll have insurance coverage?  That might weigh into my decision with the LO at 6mm.  At 8mm, I would probably do the helmet, if repositioning doesn't help after 4-6 wks or so.

  • Just saw your ticker that they are 4 mos old.  I would definitely give the repositioning a try.  Also, not sure if they mentioned it, but we were told to really try and limit how much time they spend in bouncy seats & swings.  The incline really causes them to fall back into that flat, comfy spot.  Try as much tummy time as they can tolerate also.

Our tort boy was off 20mm.

    This exactly

Mild tort with 20 mm plus facial asymmetry, it was a no brainer. He out grew his 1st helmet with 13 mm, it took us a while to decide to move forward with another helmet. He graduated around 5 mm, cranial tech really doesn't like to go by the numbers, I always had to ask. They like to rely more on a visual evaluation. I think he has improved since he graduated but his hair is funky so I am never sure if I am seeing his hair or his head. Overall I am very happy with the results, good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Thank you for your sharing your experiences.  I noticed at around 6 weeks that their heads were definitely off and we have been repositioning since then.  Kayleigh (the 6mm one) started off much worse than Arianna, so the repositioning really has worked wonders for her.  My insurance will pay for a difference of 6mm or greater and we need to prove that we have tried repositioning for 2 months... so I have to wait 2 months either way :-(
  • My singleton daugter was 14mm off with slight facial issues.  It took her 6 months to get to a 3 in her Star Band helmet.  She also had torticollis.

  • DS got his helmet last week, he is 7mm off.  His flat spot isn't terrible but it's still quite noticeable and insurance was willing to cover the cost.  We decided 3-6 months of dealing with a helmet when he won't remember it is better than being teased or having other related issues for the rest of his life.
