Cloth Diapering

antibiotics and CDing question!

After a morning of non-stop crying we went to the doctor's office and DD has an ear infection. I'm pretty sure I can use cloth while she's on antibiotics but I thought I'd double check with you experienced mamas. The pharmacist said a side effect could be diarrhea, but I think I can still use cloth right? Do I have to strip after? use liners? or do I treat everything just the same?

TIA

Re: antibiotics and CDing question!

  • DD has been on antibiotics for an ear infections 5 times and I have never done anything differently.  She may get diarrhea so you may be washing more often, but other than that you should be fine.  I have switched to sposies after antibiotics if she got a bad rash that needed cream.

Watch closely for a rash. They can get yeast infections pretty fast on antibiotics. The diarrhea doesn't help much either. Yeast is a bear to get out of CD's and to clear up if they get a bad one so when we have antibiotics I switch to flats PF's and sposies. Boiling flats and PF's get rid of yeast pretty easy but I wouldn't want to try to get it out of my pockets and fitteds b/c they can't be boiled.

  • I would just be worried about DD developing yeast.  It seems to be a fairly common side effect of being on antibiotics.  I've heard of using probiotics to counteract that.
  • DD has been on antibiotics for a week because of an ear infection and so far, no problems. She's been a little red once, but it was more irritation from poop than an actual rash.

So long as you clean everything well, it'll be fine.

  • DS got a yeast infection while on antibiotics in January and it was a b!tch to get out of the dipes (not to mention the $90 prescription AFTER co-pay).  He's on the same antibiotic now and I have him in disposables just in case.  I really don't want to fight yeast on my diapers again.  He is on probiotics and doesn't have any sign of yeast this time, thank god.  Can't wait to get back in cloth, though.

If I were you with a typical antibiotic (DS is on a quite heavy duty one) and no history of yeast, I would probably keep the same routine but consider switching to sposies at the first sign of diaper rash.  Yeast has me totally scarred.
