2nd timers- pillow??

I love my own pillow and hospital pillows usually aren't super comfy.  What are the thoughts on bringing your own pillow to the hospital?  Will it get nasty and germy or is it far enough away from all the action to safely take it?

  • I never thought of that.  I think I may bring my body pillow and just wash it when I get home.

  • I am a firm believer in packing very lightly, and I brought my pillow. I was glad I did.

  • My hospital recommends you bring your own so that you're as comfortable as possible. They also told me not to bring a white pillow case so it doesn't get changed and tossed in with the hospital laundry!

  • You will desperately want the comfort of your own pillow! I'm a germ freak, and I brought mine. It's far enough fm the action to be clean. It might get sweaty, but nothing a clean pillowcase won't fix.

  • I'm bringing my own pillow again. Was good for propping myself up in bed too. MH brought a pillow & throw blanket too since it's just a vinyl sofa that the Dad gets to sleep on. We used spare pillows that were washable, they were already in the car from when we used them at our birthing classes last time. I need to remember to grab some this time.

  • I took mine in a different colored ( not white ) pillow case. I didn't have it on my bed during labor though. I won't be taking the boppy this time since it got in the way in the post partum room.

  • Thanks ladies!  Sounds like I'll be taking mine along with me.

  • Well, I don't plan on using my nice pillows in my crotch area, so I should be good, because I want my new memory foam pillows with me! As for the body pillow, I'll have it there for after, and I guess it might get bloody if I have leaky lochia, but I didn't have issues with it last time. I just wouldn't keep the body pillow in there during labor because of the chance for fluid gushes.

I'd say take the pillow, don't put it in your crotch, and you'll be fine!

ITA - I bought a cheap (like $5.99) pillow protector from Meijer then put my own RED (not white!) pillowcase over that. I won't mind throwing out the case or protector, but I will have my own pillow!

  • I wish I would have brought my own pillow last time! The hospital's pillows were so thin! I am definitely bringing my own this time!

  • Yes, bring it. Just make sure it's not in a white pillow case. Hospitals use white and you'd hate to get it mixed up.
  • We brought our own pillows (DH wanted one too for when he spent the night.) We didn't have it near the bed during labor and delivery, they were over in the chair with the rest of our stuff. It'll be fine!!
  • I forgot to bring my pillow every. single. time. with my others lol, I REALLY hope I remember this time and I'm going to do everything I can to help me remember! I will even go as far as send someone to fetch it if it is forgotten. Hospital pillows SUCK.

  • I did and was SOOOOOO glad! I had it for laboring but not for delivery. Soooooo much better than the hospital pillows!
