When to send DH to the doctor

So DH was sick all weekend. He is all stuffy and was running a pretty good fever all weekend and is still feeling totally out of it and is starting to cough. He's on his way home from work and plans to head to bed as soon as he gets in the door.

He says that it's just a cold and he'll go to the doctor if he doesn't start feeling better soon. It's totally time to send him to the doctor, isn't it?

Normally I would say that he can decide for himself, but he's not very good about going to the doctor. He was one of those unvaccinated kids whose parents were a little off the grid, if you know what I mean. While he doesn't dislike medical care, he's not very familiar with it and thinks he's being a baby if he actually gets it. So is it time to call the doctor and tell DH "you have an appointment tomorrow at 10am?"

  • I think it's important for him to see the doctor mainly because of you. You don't want to catch anything he has. No germs for the mama!!

Tell him that if it's not important enough for him to get well for himself, he needs to do it for you and his unborn child.

  • Nope. If it's under 2 weeks, it's probably just a cold or flu virus and there is absolutely nothing a doctor should do. Coughing is usually a sign that it's on its way out, and antibiotics should not be prescribed unless he has signs of a secondary infection (i.e. a bacterial infection), like green mucous, serious sinus pain, or something like that. If the fever is gone, I wouldn't sweat it, because being sick for up to a week or two is normal!

That's kind of what I was thinking. The fever has passed and he says that it doesn't feel like he's developing a sinus infection (lots of pressure, but no serious pain). He mostly just feels like crub, but it seems like things are headed in the right direction. And yeah, there's really nothign to be done.

When he got home from work, I gave him a glass of orange juice and sent him to bed. The dog thinks that it's her birthday or something though - she slept with me, got taken for a walk, got her heartworm prevention pill (that tastes like liver), and is now back in bed with him.
