Cloth Diapering

My wool won't come clean

I use a Kissa's Wool Cover on DS every night (and only at night, so it's not used all that often) and it is gross and I can't get it to come clean. We've been using it for about 4-5 months, and I wash it every 2 weeks or so. All around the belly and the leg openings is stained a darker color - I assume from his sweat and the wetness of the diaper. The entire cover is just gross looking at this point and doesn't look clean no matter what I try.

Today, I soaked it in Eucalan for hours (whoops - forgot about it! lol) and not-so-gently scrubbed the worst parts. It still looks just as gross as it did before I washed it.

What else can I try? There is a wool setting on my washer, but there is not a soak cycle. The machine doesn't have an agitator (it's the HE Whirlpool Cabrio top loader from a couple years back), but I still worry that if I put it in there it will come out in bad condition or have shrunk. Any ideas?

Re: My wool won't come clean

  • I'd try a wool wash bar.  etsy seller threehappytrees has a great one on her site.  I don't find euclan to be very effective and the bar seems to get my woolies much cleaner.  You can really scrub with it.

  • Hmmm, well I wash my interlock in the washer and I do know some people wash their knits in their washer on the wool cycle on cold water especially if the machine has no agitator.

I just washed a really dingy gross Luxe natural colored soaker from DS in the machine with detergent and it came super clean.

You can also try scrubbing with Dawn. A lot of times lanolin will hold in the dirt and you need to strip the wool and then relanolize.  I tried that first with my soaker but it didn't work so I tossed it in the machine and it came out beautiful.

  • Yeah, you're going to have to strip with soap.  Baby wash works well.  Once you've stripped the old lanolin out, you're going to to have re-lanolize.
  • I've got a super dingy stained pair of shorties that I'm going to wash with baby soap and then throw in my washer on the wool setting. I'll let you know how it goes.
