Re: Coed?

  • Having guys there does make the "activities" part a bit more tricky and guys aren't really the type to ooh and ahh over tiny baby clothes. I would say do more of a BBQ or cocktail party type of thing - you will probably also need to provide alcohol to keep the guy's entertained. www.babyshower101.com has tons of game ideas. I think the one where you take magazines to see what the guests think your baby will look like could be pretty fun with guys and maybe a trivia one but nothing overly baby themed. Measure the belly would probably be funny too because guys will either completely over estimate or be overly modest as to not offend the mom-to-be.
  • Most of the co-ed showers I've gone to have not had games.  The few that did - the guys opted out of playing.  Also, rarely did the men stick around (or be in the same area) when the gifts were opened (even if the dad-to-be was helping).

  • I went to a coed shower from my friend and her (at the time boyfriend, now her husband).  It was his friends her friends and their immediate family.  I remember playing 2 games, the first was a balloon game where those little water ballons were blown up and had a piece of paper in it.  If the paper had like a star on it you won a prize, obivously we had to pop the balloons to find out if we won.  The second game that we played was a guessing game.  There was a list of specific baby items given to everyone and we had to guess based on the actual items shown how much they cost and then when everyone was finished we went over how much it cost for each item.  We also had to total up all the items and whoever was closest within like $2.00 got a prize.  All of those items were purchased by the hosts for the game and then given to them in addition to all the gifts brought by all the guests.

  • My sister wanted co-ed so we had a BBQ.  The men played washers, dominoes, cards, & horseshoes and drank while the women ohhhed and ahhhed over baby gifts.  It had more of a party type atmosphere, we invited entire families, kids included and it was really fun!  Many of her friends had kids before her, so it was fun for them all to get together and play.
  • I can suggest a way NOT to do a co-ed shower... don't have a "regular" shower with all the games and girly trimmings and then just invite the men along for fairness sake.  That was my cousin's shower, and it was awkward and un-fun.  The men found  a  TV and sat around together watching a game, totally ignoring the festivities, yet were loud enough to disrupt them, and the women still tried to play games and have a "traditional" shower but were put off by all the men in the room who didn't want to participate.

Something more co-ed appropriate like a BBQ where everyone can be included and have fun together would probably be better, but I've never been to one.  Sorry for my lack of helpfulness.

A cookout would be nice for both men and women. Last year I helped host a coed shower with a tropical theme. We had it outdoors, complete with punch, tropical invitations (so the guys wouldn't be scared away), and reggae/Jimmy Buffet music. People mingled and had a chance to talk with the expectant mom and her husband.

There are also games that can include men, if you want to have those. I was at a shower a few months ago where they split all the guys into two teams and had a sort of relay race to see which team could clean and diaper a doll the fastest.
