3rd Trimester

Measuring smaller at 34w than I was at 30w...anyone else?

I just had my 34w appt today. At my 30w I was measuring 29w and my mw wasn't worried about it. This time I measured 28w at 34w. This worried her (since I am measuring smaller than I was a month ago). I know go in for an NST tomorrow and a growth u/s Sat. I wasn't too worried at first as they told me LO#1 would be small all along by looking at me but then he was a healthy 8lb3oz but now the worry is starting to set in...

Has anyone else had experience with anything like this?

  • Yah it could just be the way the baby is laying in there. That's what happened to me anyway.

  • Baby measured smaller at my 36 week appointment than my 35 week appointment.  This was most likely due to baby's change in position.  Growth ultrasound confirmed that baby was at a healthy/normal size.

This is most likely the case with you too, try not to worry!

  • Same here. My growth u/s showed that LO is deep in my pelvis so I'm measuring about 3-4 cm smaller now. I worried for nothing.  I know it's hard not to worry- but try not too! I'm sure you're fine.

At my 28 week appointment, I measured 29cm. I had another appointment at 30w4d and I measured 28.5cm. I also hadn't gained any weight since the 28 week appointment.

My growth u/s is next week so I'm in a similiar situation as you... waiting is the hardest part!

I know fundal height can vary based on how the LO is positioned. I hope that your LO is growing right on track and your measurements were just off.

    GL tomorrow!

  • Have your doctor schedule you for a BPP (biophysical profile) this will give the best estimate of the weight and give you a percentage of where your baby falls between 1-100.  Anything over 10% and under 90% is healthy.

  • I've had the same experience with my first and now with my second.  My first was 8lb3oz and my ultrasound says my second will be on the smaller side (for me), but I'm still thinking the baby is going to be around 8 lbs because I feel the same with both pregnancies.  The ultrasound showed that the baby is just very low and my measurements are just now getting to 34cm at 40 weeks.  If you happen to be tall or thin with a long torso, this is pretty common.  Also keep in mind that your baby puts on most of its fat, and therefore, weight in the last few weeks so your ultrasound measurement may still predict a small baby even if you will eventually have a good size baby.  My only advice is to keep your fluid intake high so that your amniotic fluid levels aren't flagged as low during the ultrasound.
