Question about short cervix/incompetent cervix

Yesterday, someone had posted that she was diagnosed with a short cervix at 20 weeks. I also know that if someone ends up with incompetent cervix, it normally happens between 16-24 weeks. Now, if everything looks ok at your A/S, and you have no more ultrasounds, how would one know that they have a short or incompetent cervix? Do you know what I mean?

Re: Question about short cervix/incompetent cervix

  • I think often it found because of other symptoms of pre-term labor.  Unfortunately though it is one of those things that can go undetected unless you have a previous history that warrants the monitoring.  I have a friend that first pregnancy went undetected until her water broke at 33 weeks and she delivered.  Her second pregnancy was closely monitored, so the dr knew when the cervix began shortening and could monitor it and modify her treatment accordingly (type of bedrest, etc).

With DD Mine was only found because I switched OBs so I got another ultrasound for their office at 26 weeks (My anatomy scan was in the clear with my first OB)..Thats when they found the problem as I needed the dildo cam for them to even see my cervix..

This time I also passed the anatomy scan with a nice long cervix..though still needed inside cam to see it..So I get a growth u/s around 30 weeks I'm sure theyll check again..

FWIW I didnt have any pre term labor signs when the tech found it she asked if I had bleeding or pain or anything..so if I didnt have that u/s or a growth one (since I measured large) it would have never been found..
